Campotéjar is a suitable destination for a trip where hiking, historic buildings and local festival traditions offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether you would like to discover the town mainly through Cerro Castellón, its historic buildings or its patron saint festivals.

Historic Buildings in Campotéjar

The Pilar de Campotéjar stands in Plaza del Cristo de la Expiración and was built in the 16th century. Its construction dates to the period when the Catholic Monarchs granted a royal livestock droving route. Its history therefore includes not only the structure itself, but also its historical connection to this route. An old inscription, six spouts and the coat of arms of the Marquises of Campotéjar give the fountain specific historical and architectural features. When viewing the Pilar, you can therefore consider both its design and its connection with the historical route concession.

The history of the Iglesia del Cristo de la Expiración dates back to the 16th century; its construction is documented in 1546/47. The building was completed around 1754. It is a Mudéjar-style building with a single nave, a side chapel, a bell tower and four altars. The dates describe different stages in the building’s history: 1546/47 refers to its documented construction, while 1754 is the approximate year of completion. The Mudéjar designation identifies the style; the nave and side chapel describe its layout, while the tower and altars are further architectural and decorative features.

Hiking on Cerro Castellón

Cerro Castellón is home to a gypsum deposit and a prehistoric cave. The cave is not open to the public; if you are considering a visit, check access conditions locally. The climb up Cerro Castellón is steep and is considered safe. From the summit, there are extensive views across the landscape. As terrain conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Sendero Cerro Castellón Umbría Camino Basurero is a locally accessible hiking trail for walking, mountain sports and climbing. Its municipal section is 9,130 metres long. The information highlights different aspects for planning: the steepness of the climb and the summit views are key considerations for the ascent, while the length of the municipal section is relevant to the Sendero. Terrain and trail distance are therefore two separate factors to consider. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and, for the Sendero, the signage as well.

Patron Saint Festivals and Festival Traditions

The patron saint festivals in honour of the Virgen de los Remedios traditionally take place in the last week of April. Exact dates may vary from year to year, so it is advisable to check the dates for the relevant year before travelling.

During the three-day Tiradores ritual, the Alabardero, the Tamborilero, the Tiradores with their carbines and the flag bearers parade through Campotéjar. They fire powder salutes and protect the Virgen de los Remedios during the procession.

Historical Connection to a Route

Campotéjar has been historically connected since 1758 with the route that linked Madrid with Granada and Almería. This wider context complements the view of the town, while the fountain and church illustrate its specific architectural history.
