Ancash offers trekking circuits, mountain biking, nature experiences, lagoons, snow-capped peaks and festivals. This opens up different options for planning your trip: you can focus on the landscapes and trails or make archaeological sites and their history the centerpiece.

High Mountains and Glacial Lakes

Parque Nacional Huascarán covers 340,000 hectares and is located in the provinces of Ancash. Its mountainous landscape includes up to 27 snow-capped peaks higher than 6,000 meters. You will also encounter the names of these peaks in the region’s lakes: their glaciers shape the formation and surroundings of several lagoons.

Laguna 69 is a natural attraction in the district of Yungay. It was formed by the melting of Nevado Chacraraju. The trail to the lagoon starts at Cebolla Pampa; the hike can be completed in a day. This makes it possible to plan this excursion differently from the multi-day summit climb at Nevado Alpamayo.

Laguna Chinancocha lies in a glacial valley between Nevado Huascarán and Huandoy, within Parque Nacional Huascarán. Visitors can go boating there and hike the Chinancocha educational trail. Combining a boat ride with a walk along the trail offers two distinct ways to explore the lagoon landscape.

Laguna Parón is the largest lake in Parque Nacional Huascarán. It was formed by the melting of the glaciers of Nevados Caraz, Artezonraju, Huandoy, Paria, Pirámide, Chacraraju and Pisco. Hiking, landscape observation and camping are possible at the lagoon. Together with boating and the educational trail at Laguna Chinancocha, these activities offer different ways to experience the lake landscape.

Planning Hikes and Trekking

The Santa Cruz–Huaripampa trekking circuit crosses Punta Unión Pass at an altitude of 4,750 meters and reaches the Huaripampa ravine. Hiking and camping are listed as activities along the route. The pass’s elevation makes clear that the route crosses a high-altitude pass; together with the destination in the ravine, this makes it a different kind of trekking experience from the one-day hike to Laguna 69.

Ice climbing is also among the tourist activities at Nevado Alpamayo. The climb to the summit takes an average of six to eight days. Sufficient experience and professional mountain guides are prerequisites for this demanding expedition. These requirements help put the undertaking in perspective: the multi-day summit climb is not comparable to the hikes at the lagoons mentioned above.

Archaeological Sites and Observing the Sky

The archaeological site of ChavĂn in Huari Province was a ceremonial and pilgrimage center in the Andean religious world. Its architecture includes buildings made of hewn stone, artificial terraces around plazas and an internal gallery system. This contains a complex network of ventilation openings and drainage channels. Monumental stone sculpture is also a feature of the site: these works include the ChavĂn LanzĂłn, the Raimondi Stela, the Tello Obelisk, the Falconidae Portico, the Circular Plaza and the tenon heads.

The Chankillo archaeoastronomical complex is located in Casma Province. It is a National Cultural Heritage site, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2021, and is recognized as the oldest solar observatory in the Americas. Its solar observatory consists of thirteen towers arranged from north to south along a hill. They track the sun’s annual course, including the solstices and equinoxes. Chankillo thus combines archaeological structures with a specific astronomical function.

Search for Hotels Based on Your Travel Interests

When looking for hotels in Ancash, it helps to first decide how to prioritize your travel interests: lagoons and hikes, a trekking circuit, the demanding climb at Alpamayo, or archaeological sites such as ChavĂn and Chankillo. The time required also varies: the hike to Laguna 69 is listed as a one-day excursion, while the summit climb at Alpamayo takes an average of six to eight days and requires experience and professional mountain guides.
