Huaraz: Hotels amid culture and Andean scenery
Accommodation in Huaraz
The specific places differ in their features: a venerated image, more than a hundred monoliths, a lagoon with a marked trail, or a panoramic view. These differences give you a clear starting point for tailoring your trip planning and search for a hotel in Huaraz to your priorities.
Culture and history in Huaraz
The Santuario del Señor de la Soledad preserves the image of the Señor de la Soledad, the patron saint of Huaraz. The image dates back to the city's founding in the 16th century. The Santuario thus connects a specific place with the patron saint and the history of Huaraz. The Parque Lítico at the Museo Arqueológico de Áncash Augusto Soriano Infante displays more than 100 monoliths from the Recuay culture. Unlike the sanctuary, its focus is on archaeological objects and their cultural attribution. The number clearly distinguishes the museum's subject from a single image: more than a hundred monoliths from the same Recuay culture are represented here.
The Festividad del Señor de la Soledad, also known as Señor de Mayo, was also declared National Cultural Heritage. The official declaration was published on June 8, 2026. It is celebrated in the district and province of Huaraz in the Áncash Department. Alongside the sanctuary and museum, this adds an event as a cultural reason to visit.
Lagoons, trails, and viewpoints
Laguna Willcacocha lies in the Cordillera Negra at an elevation of 3,745 meters above sea level. Laguna Churup has turquoise water whose hue changes depending on the sunset. Willcacocha is characterized by its elevation and the Cordillera Negra; for Churup, features of the trail are described as well as the water. A clearly marked trail leads to the lagoon. Shortly before the lake, you have to cross rocks, while the stream on the right offers an easier alternative. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
The Mirador de Rataquenua offers panoramic views of Huaraz and the Cordillera Negra and Cordillera Blanca. Following improvements reported from 2019 onward, the Sitio Arqueológico Pumacayán was used as a viewpoint; visitors could look out over Huaraz from there. The two viewpoints thus differ in the view described: the Mirador includes the city and both mountain ranges, while Huaraz is the named destination in the view from Pumacayán.
A specific transport connection
Public minibuses to the Baños Termales de Monterrey run from Boulevard Pastorita Huaracina via the turnoff to Avenida Monterrey. Check this connection locally again before adding it to your day's plans. This lets you take the specific transport information into account when planning without mistaking it for directions to the lagoons or viewpoints.
