Huarmey lies on the banks of the Río Huarmey and at kilometer 293 of the Panamericana Norte. Huarmey is a city of fishermen and farmers, known as “La ciudad de la cordialidad.” The nickname—“City of Warmth”—is attributed to the residents’ hospitable attitude toward visitors. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing between Huarmey itself and the nearby coastal destinations: its religious tradition is visible in the cityscape, while each beach offers its own landscapes and activities.

Culture in Huarmey

The Virgen del Rosario is considered Huarmey’s patron saint; she was also appointed mayor for life. Her revered statue was carried through the city streets in a procession.

Seviche and Local Events

The cuisine also offers a local connection. In the municipality of Huarmey, Seviche Huarmeyano is prepared without fish; its ingredients include chanque, lenguitas, blanco and yuyo. The first Ruta del “Seviche Huarmeyano” visited various restaurants and wariques in the city, which competed for the best ceviche. Participating venues and dates may change. If you plan to include a specific Ruta in your trip, check the event details in advance. The Ruta went through establishments in the city; the dish is prepared in the municipality of Huarmey.

Nearby Coastal Destinations

Playa Tuquillo is part of a well-known beach circuit from Huarmey, which includes Salinas, Antivito, Maracaná, La Pocita and Médano, among others. Tuquillo is a bay formed between hills and the coast. To its north lies La Pocita, a calm pool of water among the rocks.

Route to Playa Boquerón de Manache

Nearby, a roughly 2 km walking route leads from Plaza Independencia in Huarmey along a dirt track to Playa Boquerón de Manache. Along the way, you will see cultivated fields and agricultural activities, giving you a glimpse of farming in the surrounding area. Route conditions can vary; check them before your visit if you plan to walk there. The sea has formed an abra at Playa Boquerón de Manache. Isla Manache can be seen on the horizon, where cormorants and patillos rest.

Swimming is not recommended at Playa Boquerón de Manache, as the open sea and strong waves make the shore dangerous. Sport fishing is possible there; walking and landscape photography are alternatives.

Activities and Coastal Scenery

Playa Antivito is considered suitable for surfing, bodyboarding and sport fishing; national bodyboarding championships have been held there. Compared with Boquerón, the choice of activities differs: surfing and bodyboarding are considered suitable at Antivito, while swimming is not recommended at Boquerón. Sport fishing is possible at both beaches.

Playa Salinas is part of the beach corridor of Huarmey Province. Maize seeds found in colcas near Playa Salinas are considered the oldest dated on the Peruvian coast.
