When looking for accommodation in San Juan District, cultural or nature-related interests may help you decide. Three distinct topics are central to the Nepeña District: the San Juan archaeological site with Sectors A and B, Pañamarca, and Puquio Pipi in La Grama. They differ in their history, state of preservation, and the activities described.

San Juan Archaeological Site

The San Juan archaeological site focuses on Sectors A and B. Both are subject to a provisional two-year protection period, which may be extended with appropriate justification. An extension is therefore not automatically guaranteed. The expansion of human use in the sectors is primarily due to agriculture. Small animal enclosures made from sticks, Carrizo reeds, and mats also affect the site. In addition, there have been attempts to expand residential development with makeshift huts made from mats and sticks. Agricultural use, enclosures, and attempted residential development are distinct aspects of the site’s preservation context. For travelers interested in archaeological sites, their protection is therefore also one of the issues that define San Juan. Signboards and boundary markers are planned in coordination with the Nepeña municipal administration.

Pañamarca: Cultural Heritage and Pyramids

Pañamarca has a different archaeological focus. On August 12, 2003, the site was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by National Directoral Resolution No. 581/INC-2003. It consists of three adobe pyramids built for ceremonial and defensive purposes. This combines a specific cultural heritage designation, a clearly stated number of structures, and two stated purposes. For those interested in cultural history, Pañamarca thus offers both a historical reference point and an architectural topic. By contrast, San Juan is primarily notable for the provisional protection of its two sectors and the described impacts of land use.

Puquio Pipi: Spring Pool and Activities

Puquio Pipi in La Grama is a spring pool rather than archaeological structures. A description from October 2025 mentions swimming and family picnics as visitor activities. The pool is about 40 meters long, about five meters wide, and slightly more than one meter deep. It has been reinforced with a rustic modern structure. The measurements are approximate; the activities are also reported in the description. Check current access arrangements before planning a visit.

The three topics can be viewed in terms of different interests: San Juan represents provisional protection and the management of impacts from land use, Pañamarca a dated cultural heritage designation and adobe pyramids, and Puquio Pipi a spring pool with reported swimming and picnic activities. This lets you distinguish an archaeological focus from a water-related attraction without conflating the different information about protection status, structures, and use.
