Placilla: Wine, History and Local Culture
Accommodation in Placilla
Placilla combines a strong connection to wine with a historic townscape and local traditions. When planning your trip, the experiences at Viña Ravanal are just as interesting as the history of the railway station and parish, as well as the town’s cultural heritage. The wine experiences vary considerably in format.
Winegrowing and Experiences at Viña Ravanal
In Placilla, Viña Ravanal has vineyards that are more than 100 years old and are still cultivated. During one activity, visitors can blend, bottle, cork, cap, and label their own wine. The focus is on creating your own wine—a different emphasis from a guided tasting.
The Viñedos Centenarios tour includes a walk through the vineyards, winery, and barrel cellar, as well as a guided tasting of four wines from the Gran Reserva and Premium ranges. The separate guided tasting includes three wines and does not require advance reservations. Check this current information from the operator again before your trip; tour details may also change.
The Vendimia experience includes cutting grapes and traditional grape stomping. Seasonal scheduling may change, so it is advisable to check the current date before your trip. Momento Ravanal pairs a selected Reserva wine by the fire in the Grand Lounge of Wine with a cheese board and dried fruit, and includes the use of electric bicycles for rides through the vineyards. Availability of this experience may change.
The Almuerzo Sabores + tour Privado package includes a set three-course menu featuring local products; menu details may change. The experiences described range from bottling your own wine to a tour and tasting, and a meal as part of a package. Which format interests you depends on whether you prioritize winemaking, a guided tour, or combining food with other activities.
Historic Townscape and Buildings
Placilla’s historic center is characterized by rural charm, beautiful manor houses with colonial architecture, and large areas of agricultural land. Placilla Railway Station dates back to 1871 and consists of three typical buildings from the period in which it was established. The San Francisco de Asís Parish was founded in 1905; its patronal feast is celebrated on October 4. The railway station and parish each provide a distinct point of reference in the town’s history.
Culture in Placilla Centro and the Municipality
The 2023 cultural plan lists the Fiesta de la Huma in Placilla Centro during the second week of February, the Fiesta de la Cerveza y el Vino during the fourth week of October, and Chao Agosto on the last Saturday in August. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the latest dates. Typical foods in Placilla Centro include tortillas de rescoldo.
The archaeological Piedras Tacitas are located in the Rinconada de Manantiales sector of the municipality of Placilla. They are approximately 10,000 years old and are protected under Article 21 of Chilean Law No. 17,288 on National Monuments. The 2023 municipal cultural and tourism directory also lists Fundo San Luis as a trekking destination.
