Santa Cruz brings together cultural attractions, historic architecture and activities in vineyards. The traditional Vendimia in March adds a seasonal occasion to these themes; stargazing is also possible in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel in Santa Cruz, these different highlights can help you plan your trip: your preferred cultural experiences, travel dates or activities may be decisive factors.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The Museo Colchagua is located in the center of Santa Cruz at Avenida Presidente Errázuriz 145. Santa Cruz is about 180 kilometers south of Santiago. Driving via Ruta 5 Sur takes approximately two and a half hours; actual travel time varies depending on traffic and conditions. Buses from Santiago to Santa Cruz depart frequently from the terminals at Estación Central. The two modes of transport provide different planning details: for driving, the route and approximate travel time are given, while for the bus, the departure point and frequency are provided. Before traveling by bus, check the schedule with the relevant operator, as individual schedules may change.

Cultural Sites and Architectural History

The Parroquia de Santa Cruz can be visited at the Plaza de Armas and dates back to the early 19th century. Another historic landmark is the former Santa Cruz government administration building. It was built between 1908 and 1910. Its facade is neoclassical in style and made of adobe bricks and fired clay bricks. The Reloj Carillón in Santa Cruz was commissioned in 1970 by Mayor Carlos Cardoen Decoene.

The three cultural sites offer different historical reference points. For the Parroquia, its origins in the early 19th century are central; for the former government administration building, its construction period, facade style and materials; and for the Reloj Carillón, its commission in 1970. If you are interested in history and architecture, you can include these different aspects in your travel plans rather than grouping all the sites under a single historical theme.

Vendimia, Vineyards and Starry Skies

The traditional Vendimia de Santa Cruz takes place in March. The month provides a seasonal reference point for planning your trip; the program may vary from year to year. So check the dates and the program for that year before planning a visit.

In Santa Cruz, you can explore vineyards by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle. These offer two different ways to get around, while the Vendimia brings the timing of your trip to the fore. The nearby Observatorio Cerro Chamán also offers the opportunity to observe the stars among the vineyards. This offers a different focus from exploring the vineyards: here, the focus is on the starry sky, while there, it is on the vineyards and how to explore them. You can therefore plan your trip around cultural sites, a March event or the activities that interest you most.
