The Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region offers a range of reasons to travel: more than 100 kilometers of coastline, a long-standing wine culture and protected historical sites. In Rancagua, history reaches back to the 1814 siege; in the Colchagua Valley, wineries and tastings shape the visitor experience. Coastal towns and natural areas complete the picture. First decide which of these facets you want to make the focus of your trip.

History in Rancagua, El Huique and Sewell

The Iglesia de La Merced de Rancagua has been protected as a National Historic Monument since November 11, 1954, under Law 10.616. It is associated with the 1814 Siege of Rancagua: Bernardo O’Higgins entrenched his troops in the church. The Museo Regional de Rancagua is housed in the Casa de Don Calixto Rodríguez; the building was declared a National Historic Monument on January 24, 1980, by Decree D.S. 725.

The surroundings of the Casa Hacienda San José del Carmen El Huique are also protected: Since August 29, 1996, they have been designated a Zona Típica under Decree D.E. 488, preserving the setting of a national Historic Monument. Sewell, meanwhile, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006 and is a former mining camp with more than 100 years of history. In the broader context of Chile, the mining town is considered an outstanding example of a company town built to extract and process high-grade copper.

Wine, tastings and local traditions

In the Colchagua Valley, renowned wineries offer tours with technical wine tastings and gourmet pairings. Viña Viu Manent, founded in 1935, lies along the Wine Route. The Tren del Vino is a themed route in San Fernando. A previous train journey ran from San Fernando to Santa Cruz and included wine tastings as well as tastings of local cheeses. For tours and tastings, check dates and make reservations directly with the providers.

Regional traditions are also part of the travel experience: the Fiesta del Chacolí de Doñihue celebrates Chacolí, a liqueur typical of the region. Check the date and program before adding the festival to your plans. Salt has been produced for centuries at the Salinas de Barrancas near Cáhuil; the craft is passed down from generation to generation. It is not just about a product, but also about a local occupation that continues to this day.

Coast, nature and routes through the landscape

The O'Higgins Region has more than 100 kilometers of coastline. Punta de Lobos is recognized as a World Surfing Reserve; local surf schools offer beginner lessons in surfing, bodyboarding and windsurfing. You can get there from Pichilemu by local shared taxi (colectivo), taxi, private vehicle or bicycle. Check lesson availability and transport options in advance, as they may change.

The Río Cipreses National Reserve is well suited to ecotourism; its trails pass through forests of peumo and quillay trees. The Universidad Glacier feeds the Cachapoal and Tinguiririca rivers, which in turn feed the Rapel River. By contrast, keep in mind the clear restriction on visiting Las Palmas de Cocalán National Park: it does not receive visitors and has no infrastructure for public use.

Activities and practical information

From Santa Cruz, you can visit the Observatorio Cerro Chamán to stargaze among the vineyards. Check the visiting arrangements in advance. The Termas de Cauquenes is a hot-springs destination with a swimming pool, thermal baths, a restaurant and a park for walks; check visitor regulations before making plans.

In 2012, Centro de Ski Chapa Verde had a total of 22 ski runs for skiers of all ability levels. Check its seasonal operating dates separately. When choosing accommodation, your main interest can make the difference: wine tastings, historic sites, surf lessons or nature experiences lead to different destinations. Choose your overnight base to suit the visits that matter most to you during your trip.
