Discover Chépica: Architecture, Festivals and Markets
Accommodation in Chépica
Chépica combines rural architecture with religious traditions and public life centered on its plazas and recurring markets. When planning a stay, it is worth considering the different reasons to visit: Plaza de Armas, artworks depicting the commune, and several festivals each offer something distinct. If you want to plan your trip around a market or celebration, check the dates and times in advance.
Adobe Architecture, Plazas and Art
Chépica’s rural identity is reflected in its well-preserved adobe buildings. Their described features include simple building forms and corridors running parallel to the streets. The landscape, too, retains features of a traditional rural way of life. Together, the architecture and landscape provide a fitting setting for exploring the local heritage.
Plaza de Armas is on Calle 18 de Septiembre, opposite the municipal building. It is a traditional gathering place, with preserved palmetas among its distinctive features. The Plaza Mayor is a separate location: it is home to the three-dimensional letters CHÉPICA, installed in May 2022 as a tourist attraction and a symbol of local identity.
The Chépica Heritage Portal is a relief sculpture featuring themes of agriculture, professions, crafts, folklore, landscapes and architecture. Its inner side depicts old houses on Calle Bartolomé del Real, Cerro de Lima and the commune’s coat of arms. The artwork brings together several themes that also recur in Chépica’s rural identity.
Church and Religious Traditions
The Parroquia San Antonio de Padua is located at Plaza de Armas. The church building, which was severely damaged, was demolished after the 2010 earthquake; only the bell tower remains. The Parroquia San Antonio de Padua is also associated with Stations of the Cross murals by artist Juan Echeñique.
The San Antonio de Padua Pilgrimage begins in May: the image of the saint is carried from the temple in Chépica to chapels in different neighborhoods. On June 13, it returns to the parish church, where a large Mass marks the end of the pilgrimage. The annual Romería of the Chépica Fire Department follows a different route: on November 30, it proceeds from the headquarters on Calle 18 de Septiembre to the parish cemetery on the same street.
Planning for Markets and Festivals
The Mercado de la Loica takes place on Saturdays from 2 to 6 p.m. at Plaza de Armas. It offers artisanal products and typical foods from Chépica’s rural and agricultural communities. The Feria de Emprendedores also takes place on Saturdays at the same time, in the main plaza. Both markets are a concrete reason to plan a weekend stay; confirm the hours locally before you arrive.
Another recurring celebration is the Fiesta Chepicana, also known as Semana Chepicana. It runs for several days at Chépica’s main stadium. The festivities include stalls offering food, handicrafts and typical local businesses connected with regional identity. No current annual date is specified, so if you plan to travel specifically for the event, check the dates for that year’s edition.
The Fiestas Patrias are also celebrated in the commune of Chépica, particularly in Auquinco, La Orilla de Auquinco, Paredones de Auquinco, Las Alamedas and Pampa de Lima. The program there includes live music, dancing, food and traditional games. These celebrations take place across several locations in the commune and should therefore be distinguished from the festivals named for Chépica itself.
At the communal level, the Feria de las Pulgas also takes place on Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. on Avenida O'Higgins. It offers antiques, clothing and various secondhand goods. Along with the markets at Plaza de Armas, it provides another weekend event to consider when planning your trip.
