Quinchao can be explored through three distinct highlights: Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church, the religious traditions in Villa Quinchao, and the nearby Bahía de Quinchao wetland. The Catholic church is in Villa Quinchao, in the municipality of Quinchao. It is less than one block from the coast and opposite an esplanade that serves as a forecourt during festivals. The church and the celebrations are part of the town; the wetland is a nearby natural area.

The Church and the Townscape

Nuestra Señora de Gracia is the second-largest church in the World Heritage Sites complex. It is 53 meters long and 18 meters wide, and its tower rises more than 18 meters. Construction began in the 18th century and was completed in 1880. Around 1906, the church was partially rebuilt. These dates mark different stages in its construction history: the start of construction, its completion, and a later partial reconstruction.

The church was declared a National Monument in July 1971 and became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Villa Quinchao is also protected: Decree 268 of 2013 lists the town as a National Monument in the “Typical Zone” category. The church and the town therefore each have their own designation. Villa Quinchao has a linear layout, with uniform buildings in vernacular—that is, regionally distinctive—architecture. The church dominates the townscape. Together with its position opposite the esplanade, this creates a clear connection between the building, the settlement, and the festivals for which the square serves as a forecourt.

Religious Traditions Throughout the Year

The church’s main festival is held each year on December 8 in honor of its patron saint, Nuestra Señora de Gracia. The Cabildo de Quinchao is closely associated with the religious celebration held annually on December 7 and 8. The celebration is one of the oldest religious activities on Chiloé; only the Cabildo de Cahuach is considered more important in this regard.

The Cabildo de Nuestra Señora de Gracia is a tradition passed down through families and continued through shared responsibilities. It is especially visible during the celebrations on December 8. Another annual event takes place on January 1: the Marcha de las Vírgenes procession passes through Villa Quinchao. The December celebration in honor of the patron saint and the January procession are two distinct occasions that can help you plan when to visit. If a particular festival date is important for your trip, check it in advance.

Bahía de Quinchao and Birdwatching

The Bahía de Quinchao wetland lies near Villa Quinchao. It is a 102.8-hectare nature reserve and is recognized as an Important Bird Area and as part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. The landscape includes an extensive tidal flat and a marsh area extending along the coast for approximately one kilometer. The wetland is considered a good place for birdwatching. A 2021 report identifies it as the municipality’s most important site for birdwatching tourism.

Specialized excursions and environmental education workshops are also associated with the wetland. If one of these activities is important for your trip, check in advance whether it is taking place during your visit. The area offers different aspects of nature: the tidal flat and marsh as landscape features, and birdwatching as a particular focus. The wetland is close to the town but is a separate point of interest for trip planning.

Getting There and Choosing a Destination

To reach the church, first take the ferry from Dalcahue to Quinchao Island. An asphalt road leads from the ferry terminal to the town of Quinchao. Check the ferry schedule before departing. Getting to the church and finding the wetland address different planning needs: Villa Quinchao is the main point of reference for the church and festival traditions, while Bahía de Quinchao is the nearby birdwatching destination. If you are considering Quinchao for a hotel stay, you can decide which highlights to prioritize based on what you want your trip to focus on.
