Dalcahue: Handicrafts, Heritage and Culture
Accommodation in Dalcahue
For your stay in Dalcahue, handicrafts, Chilotan heritage and cultural offerings provide different points of reference on specific days of the week. There is also practical information for getting to the town center.
Market and handicrafts
The Mercado Artesanal de Dalcahue is located on Calle Pedro Montt along the waterfront and includes a handicraft fair as well as cocinerĂas. The building is visited daily and serves as a social gathering place. The Mercado should therefore be seen not only as a place for handicrafts, but also as a meeting point in town.
The Feria Artesanal de Dalcahue offers textiles made from sheep’s wool and basketry made from the plant fibers Manila and Boqui. The goods are brought from the inner islands. The product groups differ by material: sheep’s wool defines the textiles, while Manila and Boqui are the plant fibers used for the basketry. The Feria thus highlights both the materials and the origin of the goods.
Chilote Heritage and UNESCO World Heritage
The Museo de Dalcahue was established in 1985 to preserve, interpret and disseminate the tangible and intangible heritage of the Chilotes. These three tasks can be understood as preservation, explanation and transmission. Its thematic scope therefore extends beyond a single product group and differs from the Feria Artesanal, where specific textiles and basketry are the main focus.
The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores in Dalcahue is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It offers a different cultural focus from the museum: for the church, its World Heritage status is the central point of reference; for the Museo, it is the mission to preserve and interpret the tangible and intangible heritage of the Chilotes.
Cultural offerings by day of the week
A municipal program dated January 19, 2025, scheduled weekly cultural offerings at the Anfiteatro de Dalcahue from Tuesday to Friday: folklore on Tuesdays, Zumba classes on Wednesdays, workshops on wool, leather and macramé on Thursdays, and live music and cultural performances on Fridays. The offerings differ both by day of the week and by format. If you have a particular offering in mind, take note of the relevant day and check before your visit whether it is currently taking place.
The Anfiteatro de la Costanera in Dalcahue is intended for cultural performances and outdoor events.
Getting to the town center
AerĂłdromo Mocopulli (MHC) is 10 km from the center of Dalcahue. Transfer services, regional buses or colectivos are available for the onward journey into town. There are therefore two points to consider when planning your arrival: the distance from the airfield to the center and the onward journey. Before traveling, check which of these connections suits your arrival plans.
