Chonchi brings together distinctive buildings, a historic street, a waterfront market and cultural venues. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Calle Centenario provide landmarks in the urban landscape; by the water, the Mercado Municipal offers a different perspective. Together, these places show different sides of the destination, from Chiloé’s wooden architecture to handicrafts and local produce.

Church and historic Calle Centenario

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario is in the center of Chonchi, at Francisco Coral 297. Its present-day building dates from 1893 and is an example of Chiloé’s wooden architecture school. The 1893 church building represents Chiloé’s wooden architecture school.

The historic Calle Centenario is part of the Zona Típica de la Calle Centenario and connects the town’s three levels: from the upper church area, past the harbor, to the waterfront. This connection brings the church, harbor and waterfront together in a shared urban setting. For orientation, the transition between the higher-lying church area and the waterfront is particularly distinctive.

Market and waterfront

The Mercado Municipal de Chonchi is at Calle Dr. Manuel González Canessa 2, directly on the waterfront. It consists of two buildings connected by a palafito-style plaza and a viewpoint. The market complex also has a clearly defined layout: the plaza and viewpoint are just as much a part of it as the two buildings.

The Feria Artesanal y Mercado Municipal de Chonchi has 12 stalls. They offer handicrafts and textiles, as well as handcrafted liqueurs, agricultural produce and fishery products. This range brings together handmade goods with products from agriculture and fishing. There is also a restaurant on the second floor of the Feria. The market therefore brings a variety of offerings together on the waterfront, while keeping them distinct.

Museo del Acordeón and festivities

The Museo del Acordeón’s collection features around 100 accordions. They include various types, brands and periods; most were acquired on Chiloé. The approximate number and wide range give the collection a distinctive focus among Chonchi’s cultural offerings. At the museum, musician and owner Sergio Colivoro welcomes visitors.

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario is also associated with traditional patron saint celebrations and Catholic festivities. These include Nuestra Señora del Rosario on October 7, San Carlos Borromeo on November 4, and San Pedro and San Pablo on June 29. These dates correspond to the respective feast days; they should not be taken as an event calendar for a specific travel period.

More cultural venues and getting there

The Teatro Municipal de Chonchi is on the ground floor of the municipal building at Calle Pedro Montt 254, opposite the plaza. It is used for theater, music and dance performances. The Casa de la Cultura de Chonchi also has a space for library activities, including reading clubs and story hours. The two venues therefore serve different cultural purposes: performances at the theater and library activities at the Casa de la Cultura.

If you are traveling around Chiloé in your own vehicle, you can reach Chonchi’s town center via Ruta 5, then take W-75 or W-853. This route offers a specific guide for getting there by car. Within the town, Calle Centenario connects the upper church area with the harbor and waterfront; the market is on the waterfront. You can therefore consider getting there and navigating the town’s different areas as separate, but useful, aspects of your travel planning.
