Chiloé Province: Wooden Churches, Island Towns and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Chiloé Province
Chiloé Province combines a distinctive architectural heritage with museums, handicrafts and nature experiences. When planning your trip, consider whether you would like to focus on churches and local history, hiking or boat trips. Tailor your hotel search to the topics that interest you most.
Wooden Churches and Historic Towns
The 16 churches of Chiloé, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, are an outstanding example of ecclesiastical wooden architecture in Latin America. In monumental structures made of native wood, they combine Jesuit evangelization with the craftsmanship of shipwrights. In Castro, the Iglesia San Francisco stands in the city center on Plaza de Armas: an imposing wooden building and part of the World Heritage Site. Castro is also known for its colorful palafitos, built over the sea.
In Dalcahue, the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores is located beside the handicrafts market; it is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Iglesia Santa María de Loreto in Achao is both a National Monument and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visiting and worship opportunities may vary from church to church. Check in advance which visits are possible on the day of your trip.
The museums offer additional insight into the towns. The Museo Histórico Etnográfico de Dalcahue shows how the Chiloé town has developed over time. The Museo Comunal de Curaco de Vélez also serves as a cultural center and tourist information center. In Curaco de Vélez, a restored watermill also welcomes visitors and offers insight into traditional food practices.
Markets, Island Towns and Regional Cuisine
The Dalcahue Artisan Fair offers sheep’s wool textiles and woven goods made from plant fibers such as Manila and Boqui. The goods come from the inner islands; the selection may vary by stall and season. In Quemchi, a 510-meter-long wooden walkway leads to Isla Aucar and connects the island with the town.
A cooking class can also offer a practical introduction to Chiloé cuisine. The tourist experience includes a visit to the Mercado Campesino in Castro, where fresh produce from Chiloé’s land and sea is purchased for the traditional cooking class that follows. Confirm in advance whether the experience is currently available.
Hiking Trails, Viewpoints and Natural Areas
In the Chanquín sector of Parque Nacional Chiloé, there is an elevated trail about 200 meters long with a viewpoint overlooking Lago Cucao. The park also has picnic areas, campsites, hiking trails, viewpoints and basic shelters. Trail conditions, facilities and operating conditions may change; check the conditions before your visit.
Parque Tantauco is located in the municipality of Quellón on Isla Grande de Chiloé. The northern areas at Lago Yaldad and Lago Chaiguata can be reached by land. Camping is available for overnight stays along Sendero Transversal; there is also a campsite at Lago Chaiguaco for overnight stays on this trail. On the Caleta Zorra and Ruta Tantauco trails, overnight stays are in shelters. Trails and overnight arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before planning.
In Puñihuil, the local community offers 30-minute boat trips around the islets. Departure times and seasonal availability may vary. If you would like to visit several church towns, consider the Ruta de las Iglesias: it passes through several communities in the archipelago and combines paved roads with ferry crossings. You can travel the route by car or on specialized guided tours departing from Castro. Check ferry connections and current route logistics in advance.
