Purén: History, Culture and Landscape
Accommodation in Purén
Purén can be explored through different themes: Mapuche history, architectural heritage and destinations amid nature. If you’re looking for a hotel in Purén, these highlights can help guide your plans for your stay.
History and Mapuche Culture
Fuerte de Purén was built by the Chilean Army during the Pacification of Araucanía, on the orders of Colonel Cornelio Saavedra Rodríguez, and inaugurated on November 25, 1868. The Museo Mapuche focuses on a different aspect of history: since 1983, it has highlighted the history of the Mapuche people. Its permanent museographic exhibition is devoted to local history and Mapuche identity; the collection includes archaeology, history and natural history. The site thus brings together a specific chapter of history and an explicitly Mapuche perspective on the past and identity.
A local product name also has historical roots: in 1897, a fig coffee factory was established in Purén, and its finished product was called “Moka” coffee. This account refers to the product’s former manufacture and name; it does not describe present-day coffee production or tasting opportunities.
Squares, Architecture and Cultural Life
Plaza de Purén features a central fountain shaped like a kultrún, along with lighting effects. It also includes native flora and fauna from the surrounding area. The central square thus brings designed features and connections to nature together.
Notable buildings include Teatro Municipal Mal Gatica, built in the 1950s and distinguished by its modernist architectural style, and the former Escuela Superior de Niños N°44, dating from 1920. The former school houses Biblioteca Municipal Luciano Huichalaf Alcapan and a Salón Patrimonial, where various cultural activities take place. Its program may change. Parroquia San Enrique adds to the architectural heritage; it was built between 1907 and 1910. Together, these places represent different periods of construction and cultural functions.
Green Spaces and Nearby Destinations
Parque Histórico de Purén has green spaces, a play area and a viewpoint. This combination offers a different emphasis from the museums and historic buildings: here, open spaces and views are part of the visit, along with a designated play area.
Salto Rayen is located on the Purén–Contulmo road, at kilometer 9. The waterfall is 22 meters high and has a 17-meter cascade; native flora surrounds it. Monumento Natural Contulmo is described as a park with 120 native species and a 3.2-kilometer trail. The two destinations offer different natural attractions: the waterfall at Salto Rayen, and the biodiversity and trail at Monumento Natural Contulmo.
Ruta Manzanal is a tourist circuit along the Purén–Contulmo road. Among other places, it connects Salto Rayen, Túnel Sanzana, Monumento Natural Contulmo and Salto La Virgen. Another route, the wetland circuit between Purén and Los Sauces, includes the Ipinco, Guadaba and Huitranlebu wetlands and is described as freely accessible. While Ruta Manzanal links several named attractions, the wetland circuit focuses on three wetlands.
Individual sites along the Purén–Contulmo road also have their own historical or practical conditions. Túnel Sanzana was the second tunnel on the former Ramal Purén-Lebu railway line. Construction of the rail network ended in 1937 and train services ended in 1985; it carried coal, timber and passengers. Access to the tunnel is restricted. The petroglyphs at kilometer 3 are on private property; you must ask the owner for permission to access them. Salto de Agua La Virgen waterfall is located at kilometer 7 in the Manzanal sector, within Centro Turístico Lawenco.
