From Piedra del Águila in Nahuelbuta National Park, the view stretches across about 215 km of Chile’s width; the viewpoint is at an altitude of 1,460 m. The park itself has remained almost unchanged for more than 10,000 years. Here, two distinct scales come together: the vastness of the view and a long-term perspective on the landscape.

Geopark and different perspectives

The Kütralkura UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the Araucanía Region, covers 8,053 km² and was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2019. The designation recognizes efforts to base environmental protection and regional development on both traditional Mapuche knowledge and scientific findings. This brings into view not only the landscape, but also how conservation and development draw on different foundations of knowledge. For your trip planning, Kütralkura is a distinct focus alongside viewpoints and activities in the national parks.

Exploring Conguillío National Park

During the summer season, kayaks and boats are available to rent in Conguillío National Park. Before your trip, check whether this seasonal service is available during your visit. The Sendero Travesía Río Blanco hiking trail offers a different kind of outing: it is 3.74 km long, takes eight hours one way and is classified as very difficult. When planning, you should therefore look beyond the distance and also take the stated one-way duration and difficulty into account. Trail conditions and seasonal hazards can change; check conditions before setting out. Within the same national park, a seasonal rental service and a hiking trail explicitly classified as very difficult offer two distinct types of activity.

Skiing and seasonal conditions

There are also specific options for winter: ski slopes are located in the part of Villarrica National Park that lies in the Araucanía Region. Corralco S.A. operates a ski resort under concession in Malalcahuello National Reserve. These details refer to two different locations and offerings, not to one shared ski area. As operating conditions at winter facilities can change from season to season, check the conditions for each location before your trip. This lets you include skiing as a distinct focus in your choices without mixing it up with the summer activities in Conguillío.

Getting your bearings around Lago Budi

For orientation toward the coast, the drive from Temuco to Lago Budi provides a useful reference point: the lake is 80 km away via Ruta S-40, about an hour’s drive. The distance and driving time are approximate and may vary depending on conditions. Plan the route as a guide, rather than as an exact travel time. Together with the region’s scenic and activity highlights, this route helps distinguish different travel ideas: views and landscapes in Nahuelbuta, seasonal activities and a challenging hike in Conguillío, skiing at two named locations, and a drive to Lago Budi.
