If you are looking for a hotel in Curacautín, choosing a clear focus for your stay can help: would you mainly like to see the plaza, crafts and cultural sites, or include the routes described here in your plans? Curacautín combines a well-defined town center with named routes to natural destinations. The sites and routes differ in their content and destinations, providing a factual basis for planning your stay.

Plaza de Armas and Petroglifo del Llaima

Plaza de Armas occupies a city block in the town center. In the middle are a fountain and trees; paths cross one another, and the trees are carefully pruned. The planting includes a varied collection of native and exotic conifers, including cypresses, pines and araucarias. These features give you several specific points of reference when visiting the town center.

At the southwest corner of the plaza, opposite the municipal administration building, is the Petroglifo del Llaima: a black boulder with numerous carved figures. The stone was brought to the plaza in 1994. Its rock formed from lava from the Llaima Volcano and was later transported by a glacier as a glacial erratic. The rock was probably worked for ceremonial purposes sometime between 1100 and 1600. The dating should therefore be understood as a time period, and the ceremonial use as a possible interpretation, not as an exact year or a confirmed purpose.

Crafts and Cultural Sites

North of Plaza de Armas, across the street, is the Centro de Exposición de Artesanía de Curacautín. It offers wool goods and textiles, other local handicrafts, and gourmet products. The items on display include finely worked Picoyos. A Picoyo is the part of an araucaria where a branch joins the trunk. This means that the craft can be appreciated not only as a finished product: its botanical context also explains the distinctive piece of material it is made from. A tourist information office and public restrooms are located next to the center.

The Casa de la Cultura de Curacautín is located at Serrano 295, Curacautín, Región de la Araucanía, Chile. The official cultural management plan for 2024–2028 describes it as a venue for various artistic and cultural activities. The plan also mentions a flexible space in the amphitheater for presentations by local artists. The Museo Pablo Ruedi Branger has a different focus: it is dedicated to preserving Curacautín’s documentary and architectural heritage, including through the local history archive and the historic and industrial Molino San Pablo complex. The museum’s first exhibition included materials on the railway, the Mosso company union, the city’s archives and the first flight across the Andes. This describes the first exhibition and does not necessarily reflect the current exhibition program.

Local Products and Routes

A 2025 travel guide lists, among other things, stalls selling prepared foods, fish, groceries, local handicrafts and traditional products at the Feria de Abastos. The offerings may change. The market thus complements the handicraft offerings with a selection of groceries and prepared foods, without implying that the range remains the same over time.

The Ruta Patrimonial Araucanía Andina is 129 kilometers long. It starts at Plaza de Armas in Curacautín and leads to the upper Ranquil Valley in the mountains, where steep slopes are surrounded by araucarias. Two routes to national parks are separate from this: from Curacautín, access to Parque Nacional Conguillío is via Route R-925-S, which starts near the cemetery. According to route information, this route is passable from November to May and closed in winter. According to route information, the route is passable from November to May and closed in winter. Route R-755 leads from Curacautín toward Parque Nacional Tolhuaca. The information names different destinations and routes; check current road conditions before driving.

At the municipal level, Curacautín is part of the priority travel destination Araucanía Andina, as well as the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the Kütralkura UNESCO Global Geopark. The municipality has a significant concentration of natural attractions and cultural heritage; its planning designation as a priority travel destination may change. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between cultural sites in Curacautín and the routes described to the named natural destinations.
