If you are looking for a hotel in Lumaco, you can plan your trip around the town’s themes: local history, Mapuche culture, and local food culture offer different highlights. Historic places of remembrance sit alongside ceremonies and culinary traditions. This can help you decide which aspects of Lumaco best suit your travel interests.

Local history and cultural heritage

Lumaco was founded on November 8, 1869. At first, the town was located beside the Pichi-Lumaco River, next to the fort. Frequent flooding later led to Lumaco being moved to the south bank of the same river. Today, Lumaco is a small, quiet village.

The Museo Histórico de Lumaco preserves and presents local history through objects and photographs of settlers and members of the Mapuche people. The collection thus combines visual materials and objects as different ways of exploring the town’s history. SERNATUR lists Lumaco as a local folkloric attraction in the spontaneous folk architecture category, with the subtype “village.” This classification comes from a 2012 tourism inventory.

An important historical site is the ford at Kuralaba. On December 23, 1598, Governor Martín García Oñez de Loyola was killed in a surprise attack there, opposite what is now Lumaco’s municipal cemetery. The event is considered a significant defeat of Spanish forces by the Mapuche during the Arauco War. The Lugar del Desastre de Curalaba is a regionally classified historic site in the Curalaba sector; Lumaco is the nearest urban settlement.

Mapuche culture and commemorative events

In Mapuche culture, We Tripantu is the celebration of the return of the sun. At a We Tripantu ceremony in Lumaco, Machi and Mapuche representatives of the municipality prayed together with the mayor at a Canelo tree in Plaza Intercultural de Lumaco. At another ceremony, local and traditional Mapuche authorities went to the municipal sports hall to share a meal with the community.

Plaza Intercultural de Lumaco also hosted a Kuralaba event. A commemorative event included a Feria Costumbrista, live music, and a reenactment of the 1598 battle performed by local actors. More than a hundred local actors took part in the Kuralaba reenactment. The cultural events described here therefore differ both in focus and form: the We Tripantu ceremonies are connected with Mapuche traditions, while the Kuralaba event centers on historical remembrance and performances.

Local food culture and routes in the municipality

The Fiesta del Cerdo Avellanero focuses on culinary knowledge about pork by-products and promoting the local Cerdo Avellanero brand. A 2019 municipal report describes the festival as an annual tradition. At one edition, hundreds of visitors gathered on Lumaco’s main street for a food event featuring a variety of dishes and local pork products. Its focus ranges from making use of these products to supporting a local brand.

The municipality describes the Ruta Valle del Kuel as an event held year after year in the municipality of Lumaco; a fourth edition was documented in 2026. Guided visits offered in this context included tours in the Isla Catrileo sector along the Paillamil Kuel and the Pultreñerewe Kuel. The cultural, historical, and heritage significance of the sector was highlighted. The sector is located in the municipality of Lumaco; the activity should therefore not be understood as an offering in the town of Lumaco itself. If you are planning to travel for an event, check the specific dates in advance.

The Lumaco municipal tourism office aims to highlight the town’s cultural wealth and connect local products and services with tourist visitors.
