The Pelourinho de Penedono tells the story of a defining period in the town’s history: the surviving structure today was built at the beginning of the 16th century in connection with the new Foral, granted by King Manuel I on 27 November 1512. It is classified as an IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). History in Penedono is reflected not only in a single monument, but also in the granite houses and lanes that shape the townscape.

Townscape and Cultural History

Wide avenues and streets are as much a part of the town as its simple, narrow lanes. The historic centre is also home to the Loja Interativa de Turismo de Penedono, at the foot of Castelo de Penedono. The Fontanário Quinhentista and Castro da Tritana are listed as places of tourist interest in Penedono.

The Centro de Interpretação de Penedono provides information about dolmens and two named necropolises: Senhora do Monte near Penela da Beira and Castainço, and Lameira de Cima near Antas. Monte Airoso offers a different historical perspective: it is surrounded by a fortified settlement dating from the Late Bronze Age. In Adobispo, both the Capela da Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the Capela do Senhor da Estrada date from the 18th century. The current building of the chapel at the Santuário de Santa Eufémia is believed to date from the beginning of the 19th century; the sanctuary grounds cover eight hectares.

Pilgrimages and Festivals Throughout the Year

Those wishing to combine a trip with a religious festival will find several events held annually. The Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Cabeça takes place on 25 March and includes a walking pilgrimage, a Mass and a procession. The Romaria de Santa Eufémia is celebrated every year on 15 and 16 September. Its fair offers regional products, including Marrã: pork cooked in wine in an iron pot.

The SĂŁo Pedro festival on 29 June includes an ethnographic parade showcasing local traditions, as well as the annual SĂŁo Pedro fair, a Mass and a procession in honour of the patron saint. Another cultural event is the Feira Medieval de Penedono, an immersive historical re-enactment in the historic centre. These dates provide specific guidance for the festive days; when planning, the annual pilgrimages can be distinguished from the buildings and landscapes described as year-round attractions.

Landscapes and Trails

The Miradouro de Santa Luzia is located at one of the highest points in the Freguesia of Póvoa de Penela. From there, the view stretches across the landscapes of the Douro and mountainous scenery. Each of the three routes described also has its own focus: the PR1 – Rota do Sirigo combines distinctive landscapes with religious and geological heritage, as well as the Castanheiro da Guerra natural monument.

The PR2 – Trilhos do Ouriço e da Castanha focuses on chestnut groves and the rural surroundings; along the trail, visitors can experience the region’s characteristic flora and fauna. The PR3 – Rota do Azeite passes through olive groves and a transitional landscape strongly shaped by the Beira and leading to the Douro. The themes of the routes are therefore distinct: religious and geological heritage on the PR1, chestnut landscapes and nature on the PR2, and olive groves and the transition from the Beira to the Douro on the PR3.

When looking for a hotel in Penedono, these different reasons to visit can help guide your choice: if you want to plan your trip around a pilgrimage, the annual dates are key; if you are more interested in heritage or landscapes, the buildings and route themes described offer other options. This can help you choose your destination based on what you would like to experience in Penedono.
