The Dão shapes the landscape around Santa Comba Dão in different ways: at Zona Fluvial da Pena, a bend in the river reveals rock formations shaped by the water and a reflective stretch of water. Near Granjal, granite rocks and numerous strawberry trees are part of the riverside landscape. For a sweeping view of the surrounding area, Miradouro do Outeirinho offers a panorama of the Dão and the area of the União de Freguesias de Óvoa e Vimieiro.

Water, swimming area and trails along the Dão

The Senhora da Ribeira swimming area is one of the municipality’s main tourist attractions. Its visitor facilities offer space to relax, swim and take in the surrounding nature. This makes for a different kind of riverside visit than a walk through the river landscape: here, swimming and relaxation take centre stage, while elsewhere rocks, the watercourse and vegetation shape the scenery.

The Ecopista do Dão also brings together nature and activity. The section near Santa Comba Dão can be explored on foot or by bicycle and runs alongside the river through mountainous landscapes of schist and granite. If you are planning to rent a bicycle, Abelenda bicycle rental is located directly on the Ecopista; check availability separately with the provider. The Ecovia do Mondego begins at the end of the Ecopista in Santa Comba Dão. It is approximately 40 kilometres long and extends to the boundary of the municipality of Penacova.

This gives you different scales to consider when planning: on the Ecopista section near Santa Comba Dão, you can choose between walking and cycling; the Ecovia do Mondego can be viewed in terms of its approximate length and endpoint at the municipal boundary of Penacova. Each route name also raises its own questions for your trip: Which mode of transport suits your plans, and which distance would you like to cover?

Architectural history and finding your way around

Casa dos Arcos is a cultural and historical point of interest in the town centre. The building is a work of Mannerist civil architecture; its construction was commissioned by the Vasconcelos family in the mid-17th century. The Santa Comba Dão tourist office is on the ground floor. If you need information while you are there, check the current opening hours in advance.

Another historic stop is the Igreja da Misericórdia de Santa Comba Dão. Construction began in 1737, and the church was inaugurated in 1755. The Baroque church has a single-nave layout, a high choir, a presbytery and an attached sacristy; its furnishings include gilded carved-wood altars. The church is usually closed. If you would like to visit, contact the tourist office.

The foral charters also give local history a specific point of reference in time: the Manueline charters of Couto do Mosteiro, Óvoa, Pinheiro de Ázere, Santa Comba Dão and São João de Areias were granted between March and July 1514. For travellers interested in historic names and places as well as the landscape, this chronology complements the picture of the buildings and the present-day surroundings.
