Moimenta Da Beira: Wine, Water and Megalithic Heritage
Accommodation in Moimenta Da Beira
A trip to Moimenta da Beira can bring together a wide range of interests: wine and regional cuisine, river landscapes and nature, or archaeology and local culture. The paths along the Rio Paiva, the megalithic sites and the waterside leisure areas offer different starting points for planning your trip.
River Landscapes, Plateau and Prehistoric Sites
Parque Paiva Natura encompasses riverside ecosystems along the Rio Paiva, with a remarkable diversity of animal and plant species. Visitors can follow a walking trail or a motorised route, both with ecological and officially approved signage. Information panels and printed visitor information provide additional guidance.
The routes also differ in their thematic focus. Rota do Paiva – PR1 follows the Rio Paiva and the surrounding rural landscape. Rota dos Penedos da Fonte Santa – PR6 explores the rocky Nave plateau, with its geological heritage and distinctive animal and plant life. You can choose according to the landscapes that interest you: PR1 focuses on the river and rural surroundings, while PR6 centres on rocky terrain, geology and nature.
Archaeologically, Rota MegalĂtica da Nave – PR2 offers a different focus. It leads to menhirs and monumental megalithic tombs associated with burial practices from around 6,000 years ago. Another archaeological feature is Statue-Menhir 3 of Serra da Nave. One scholarly interpretation dates the monument to the Early or Middle Bronze Age; this remains a proposed attribution.
Waterside Spots and Leisure
A municipal description dated 22 July 2021 lists a beach bar, shaded areas, picnic facilities, toilets, showers and a diving platform at Zona Balnear da Barragem de Vilar. The activities it mentions include family outings, picnics, birdwatching and sport fishing. Check whether these facilities are still available before visiting. The reservoir at Barragem do Vilar, near Moimenta da Beira, also offers good conditions for water sports.
In Alvite, Zona de Lazer da Ribeira da Pontinha has a reservoir suitable for swimming, as well as green areas shaded by trees. Zona de Lazer do Vidual offers a different landscape: it is in Leomil, beside a reservoir at the confluence of Ribeira de Leomil and Ribeira de Valongo. Choosing your outings according to the character of the surroundings gives you different waterside and landscape experiences.
Museums, History and Local Culture
Casa Museu Gente da Nave was founded in November 2000. The household objects it preserves include iron pots, wooden clogs, straw mattresses or bedding, and patchwork quilts. Fundação Aquilino Ribeiro displays hundreds of personal items belonging to the writer Aquilino Ribeiro, including books, postcards and photographs.
Another historical detail can be found at the tower of the parish church of Moimenta da Beira: built in 1932, it contains the bells from the Convent of S. Francisco in Vila da Rua. In Alvite, residents traditionally made handicrafts such as baskets, patchwork quilts, lace shawls and wooden clogs, as well as crivos and masseiras, straw bedding and iron pots. These themes give your trip different cultural focuses, from personal collections to traditional crafts.
The festival calendar can also be important when planning a trip. The municipal festival in honour of Saint John is held every June in Moimenta da Beira, with the main day on 24 June.
Wine and Regional Cuisine
Quinta dos Monteirinhos in Moimenta da Beira offers guided tours of its vineyards and wine cellar, with wine tastings and samples of regional products. If you plan to include this, check the booking information for your preferred date.
Regional dishes highlighted by the municipality include roast kid goat and stuffed trout, accompanied by “Terras do Demo” wine. Sweet specialities include Arroz doce na cesta and baked apple. Along with a wine tour, the cuisine offers a distinct focus on food and drink; museums, the festival and archaeology may appeal to travellers with other interests.
