Caria is located in the Serra de Leomil. If you are planning a stay and looking for a hotel in Caria, you can shape your trip around several specific themes: sacred buildings, memorials, archaeological remains and a hiking trail with a named starting point. These places offer insights into different eras, as well as views of the landscape and local festivities.

Chapels, a Church and Memorials

The Sra da Guia was built in the 19th century and stands on elevated ground. From there, the view stretches far across the landscape. Access is via an impressive grand staircase made of regional granite. According to tradition, the chapel stands on the rocks of a hill called Castelo, where one of Caria’s castles once stood. This story should be understood as a tradition.

The Capela Sr dos Aflitos also dates from the 19th century. Inside are several ex-votos. The grounds include a picnic area and barbecue facilities. The Rota do Paiva hiking trail begins at the Senhor dos Aflitos picnic area in the municipality of Caria. The trail’s starting point is therefore clearly identified and is located on the chapel grounds.

The Igreja Matriz de Caria was built in the 18th century. Its interior consists of three naves separated by columns. Paintings by the artist Álvaro Nogueira can also be seen there. The layout of the interior and the paintings attributed to a named artist are two distinct aspects of the church that you can consider when exploring its architecture.

A monument in Jardim do Adro symbolizes the Foral de Caria. This charter was granted in 1514 during the reign of D. Manuel I. The Monumento aos combatentes commemorates the men of the municipality of Caria who served Portugal on various fronts. The two monuments have different focuses: one on the history of the Foral, the other on the service of the municipality’s residents.

Archaeological Remains and Landscape

Chandeirinha was a fortified settlement during the Iron Age. The Tesouro de Caria dates from the Roman period: it consists of dozens of silver coins and some pottery fragments, and was discovered in 1961. The Sepultura Da joana is a well-preserved anthropomorphic tomb carved into the rock, dating from the Christian Middle Ages. “Anthropomorphic” here refers to the human-shaped form of the tomb.

Only ruins remain in Caria of a castle of castro origin. Another historical description of a location is explicitly cautious: at Levada / Juncais, there is said to have been a settlement on a hill above the meadows on the gentle slopes along the banks of the Rio Paiva.

The Lagar dos Moiros is also among the historic sites described. It consists of a lagareta with two basins: one rectangular and one rounded. These differing shapes are a specific architectural feature of the site, distinct from the finds and the remains of the castle.

Dates to Help Plan Your Trip

The festival calendar lists the Festas da Senhora da Guia on the second weekend of August in Caria and the Festas do Senhor dos Aflitos on the third Sunday of August at Senhor dos Aflitos. The Festas de Santa Luzia are listed for 13 December in Caria. If these dates are important for your trip, confirm them before making plans.
