A marked trail of more than seven kilometres connects six archaeological sites in Oliveira do Conde: the Complexo Rupestre do Ameal, the Orca da Palheira, the Orca do Outeiro do Rato, the Abrigo da Orca, the Orca de Santo Tisco and the Dólmen da Orca. The Circuito Pré-Histórico Fiais/Azenha brings these places together as a clear focal point for travellers interested in archaeology.

Megaliths and Rock-Cut Tombs

The trail’s megalithic monuments include structures dating back to the fourth millennium BC. The Orca de Santo Tisco is a dolmen with a barely indicated entrance passage; its chamber has an almost rectangular ground plan and nine supporting stones. The Orca da Palheira has an unusual later history: the monument was partly incorporated into the construction of a house, and until the 1970s its burial chamber served as the kitchen for the family who lived there, “Os Planetas”.

Another chapter in medieval history is revealed at the Núcleo de Sepulturas antropomórficas da Cova da Moira. It comprises human-shaped rock-cut tombs from the 13th and 14th centuries. The Lapa da Moira is part of the Circuito Patrimonial das Cimalhinhas in Cabanas de Viriato.

Museums, Architecture and Local History

The Museu Municipal Manuel Soares de Albergaria is housed in a building bearing a coat of arms. Its four permanent exhibition rooms hold valuable collections of painting, archaeology, sculpture, ethnography and weapons. A visit with a guide can be arranged; it is best to schedule it before your trip.

The Casa do Passal, also known as Vila de São Cristóvão, is classified as a National Monument and belonged to Aristides de Sousa Mendes. He was responsible for saving thousands of Jews from Nazi persecution. The Museu Aristides de Sousa Mendes opened on 19 July 2024 as a place for reflection, study and research.

The Igreja Matriz de Oliveira do Conde brings together features from the 16th to 18th centuries and a gilded Joanine altarpiece in the main chapel. The same church houses the tomb of Fernão Gomes de Góis, chamberlain to King João I. It rests on four lions and features numerous details carved in stone. The history of education is also represented: the Núcleo Museológico das Escolas Primárias is housed in the former Escola Conde Ferreira, the municipality’s first primary school, which dates from 1866.

Crafts, Tradition and Nature

The Núcleo Museológico do Lagar de Varas de Parada preserves a 20th-century olive oil mill. Its equipment includes crushers, presses, basins, millstones, ceramic vessels and press boards. Here, visitors can trace the traditional production of olive oil, which was still powered by animals at the time. Visits are available by appointment.

Olive oil and the famous Vinho do Dão remain among Carregal do Sal’s important agricultural products. Another local tradition is the Dança Grande, also called Dança dos Cús: in Cabanas de Viriato, it is part of the intangible cultural heritage and is celebrated especially enthusiastically on Carnival Monday and Shrove Tuesday. As the Carnival dates change each year, check the exact dates before your trip.

Those interested in nature as well as culture can find riverside, shrub and flowering vegetation along the Grande Rota do Mondego. It offers a particularly colourful natural spectacle in spring.

Getting There and Planning

Carregal do Sal can be reached by road via the A25 and by train via the Linha da Beira Alta. Check the latest timetables for your trip.
