Moledo – Landscapes, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Moledo
Moledo lies in a valley between Serra de São Lourenço and Serra de São Salvador. The landscape has a clear connection to the surrounding mountain ranges; churches, archaeological traces and an ancient inscription are also among the town’s cultural and historical themes. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: a route with a summit climb and panoramic views, or an exploration of Moledo’s history across several periods.
Landscape and trails
The GR52, Grande Rota da Transumância, starts in the village of Casais do Monte in the Freguesia de Moledo. It climbs to the summit of Serra de São Lourenço and offers views in every direction. The PR9, Trilho da Azenha, starts next to the Igreja Paroquial de Moledo. The two trails therefore differ first of all in their starting points: the GR52 starts in Casais do Monte, while the PR9 starts at the church. The GR52 also offers the experience of climbing to the summit and taking in the panoramic views; for the PR9, the defining reference point is its starting location beside the church.
Cascata do Inferno is located in the place called Inferno. This adds another named landscape feature to the mountain ranges. When planning a trip and choosing between different nature experiences, you can weigh a climb with panoramic views against a waterfall at this clearly identified location.
Traces from different periods
The Igreja Paroquial de Moledo was built in its entirety around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The fortified settlement of São Lourenço represents a much earlier period: it was built in the Iron Age and continued to exist into Roman times. A specific phase of church construction and the history of a settlement spanning several periods thus represent different historical themes in Moledo.
The Castros de Maga are described as archaeological remains associated with Moledo’s origins during the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Another trace from antiquity is the inscription at Penedo de Lamas. It consists of 11 lines and contains letter combinations known as nexuses, which are typical of Roman inscriptions. A. Tovar and M. Lourdes Albertos considered the inscription to be a votive offering dedicated to several local gods. Two aspects are important for interpreting it: the number of lines and the nexuses describe features of the writing, while its religious significance remains a cautious interpretation.
Azenha de Moledo is now in ruins; olive oil used to be produced there. Its present condition as a ruin and its former function together add an example of past production to the archaeological and church-related themes.
