Sernancelhe: Heritage, Távora and Chestnut Traditions
Accommodation in Sernancelhe
Sernancelhe lies between the mountain ranges of Serra da Lapa and Serra da Zebreira and along the Távora River, in a landscape also shaped by the sweet chestnut tree. Cultural heritage, water activities at Vila da Ponte and regional cuisine offer different highlights for your trip. You can tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most.
Heritage and Architecture
The Pelourinho de Sernancelhe bears the year 1554 and is a monument in the Manueline style. It is also classified as an IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). Its date, style and protected status give the monument a clear historical context.
The Solar dos Carvalhos also tells the story of the town’s architectural history: Manuel António Correia de Carvalho had it built in the second half of the 18th century. In 2016, the building was classified as a Property of Public Interest. Its private chapel contains a gilded wooden altarpiece.
The Santuário da Senhora da Lapa was completed in 1635 and features Baroque and Philippine architectural influences. Inside, you can admire the altars of the Crucifixion and the Death of Saint Joseph. The feast of Senhora da Lapa takes place every year on 15 August and continues to draw thousands of pilgrims. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the specific event dates in advance.
Water and Trails at Vila da Ponte
Praia Fluvial de Vila da Ponte is part of the Albufeira do Vilar and the Centro de Desportos Náuticos de Vila da Ponte. Motorised and non-motorised watercraft are permitted on the water, except for motorboats such as jet skis. Activities mentioned include pedal boats (gaivotas), canoes and stand-up paddleboards, as well as windsurfing and kitesurfing. You must stay within the designated areas.
Another point of reference is the 3 km Ecovia, which runs between Caminho da Cheira and the footbridge over Ribeira de Ferreirim. The route passes through the built-up area of Vila da Ponte.
Chestnuts and Regional Cuisine
Centuries of connection with the sweet chestnut tree have shaped the landscape of Sernancelhe’s villages and hillsides. Chestnuts are also a feature of the local cuisine: in Sernancelhe, they are boiled, roasted, made into pudding or prepared as preserves. These preparations range from simple dishes to sweet treats.
Regional specialities also include Torresmos, carne estremeada, grilled pork steaks and fried liver with boiled potatoes. Together with the chestnut dishes, these foods offer a glimpse of the region’s culinary diversity.
