Oliveira de Frades: Trails, Megaliths and Railway History

Oliveira de Frades reveals itself through a variety of themes: trails by the water, riverside forests, rural architecture, railway history and megalithic monuments. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these highlights. Each route has its own natural and cultural focus; churches, bridges and collections offer deeper insight into particular aspects of the area’s history.

Riverside trails, rivers and forest

The Trilho do Vouga runs along the reservoir shore, following shaded paths past small streams and waterfalls. Here, the water and the shoreline shape the route. The Ecopista do Vouga offers a different connection to the river: it runs along the former Vouga railway line and follows the Rio Vouga. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by their landscapes: the reservoir shore is the focus of the Trilho, while the Ecopista follows the river along the former railway line.

The PR2 – Rota do Gaia also follows a river, the Rio Gaia. Its route passes through riverside woodland with oak, chestnut, cork oak and laurel trees. Those interested in riverside vegetation will find a different focus here than on the trails by the reservoir or along the Rio Vouga: the woodland and the tree species mentioned give this route its character.

Village streets and trails steeped in history

The PR4 – Rota dos Caminhos com Alma passes through old village streets on the northern slopes of the Serra do Caramulo. Granite and slate houses line the streets, giving rural architecture a tangible place in the route’s landscape. The PR4 also passes through the Carvalhedo da Gândara, considered the largest continuous stand of pedunculate oak in Portugal. Other destinations along the route include a viewpoint and the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Paz. The Anta do Espírito Santo D’Arca is incorporated into the PR4 route.

At the Pedra poisadoira, the PR4 also takes you to a place associated with an earlier burial practice: during funerals, coffins were set down there so people could rest and pray. The route brings together landscape, village life and traditional rituals, though these are distinct themes: the granite and slate houses show how the villages were built, while the Pedra points to a former custom.

Megaliths, churches and railway heritage

The Dólmen de Antelas is located in Lugar de Antelas, Pinheiro de Lafões, and is classified as a National Monument. This completely preserved megalithic monument includes a burial chamber made of eight granite orthostats, a structure about 2.5 metres high and a corridor. The orthostats are decorated with red and black paintings dating back more than 5,000 years. Each component illustrates a different aspect of the monument: the burial chamber, structure and corridor are all part of it, as are the painted stones.

The Ponte da Soalheira was built in 1913 as one of the bridges on the Vale do Vouga railway line. Elsewhere, the railway’s history becomes part of a visit to the present-day town: Oliveira de Frades is home to the Centro Interpretativo da Linha do Vale do Vouga. Two churches offer different historical perspectives. The Igreja de São Pelágio dates from the 12th century and features several decorative techniques as well as a black altar. The Igreja Paroquial de São João Batista preserves detailed gilded woodcarving from the Baroque period. The buildings therefore highlight different themes: a medieval church, Baroque woodcarving and the history of a railway line.

Collections on rural life

The Museu das Técnicas Rurais – Museu Municipal holds ethnographic collections on rural life as well as archaeological objects from monuments in the municipality. Two ways of exploring the local past come together here: collections on rural life and finds from archaeological sites. Along with the Centro Interpretativo da Linha do Vale do Vouga, these institutions complement the trails and buildings with themes to explore through collections and railway history.
