Vila Nova Da Cerveira: Culture, Art and the Minho
Accommodation in Vila Nova Da Cerveira
The following places offer specific points of interest, from collections and architectural styles to routes and scenic views.
Architectural History and Visual Arts
Castelo de Cerveira was built around 1320 at the behest of the monarch D. Dinis to defend the newly established settlement of Vila Nova de Cerveira. The oval layout has a circumference of about 260 metres; eight square towers protect the complex. You can still walk along some surviving sections of the medieval wall.
Convento San Payo was founded at the end of the 14th century by Franciscan monks from Galicia. Following its restoration, it became a museum and studio displaying several hundred sculptures, drawings and paintings by José Rodrigues. Visits and workshops introduce visitors to art and nature through the collections and the sculptor’s works. Check the arrangements before you travel.
The current structure of Igreja Matriz de Vila Nova de Cerveira dates back to a renovation in the 18th century and a reconstruction in 1881. The main altar and carvings in the national style depict the Adoration of the Magi and the scene of the Last Judgment.
Casa do ArtesĂŁo is located in a former fish market at Baluarte de Santa Cruz that has been converted for new use. It supports regional crafts and the artisans who make them; the building is considered an example of 19th-century iron architecture. On weekends, visitors may find artisans there making cork products, ceramics and embroidered items. The offering may vary seasonally, so it is advisable to check availability before travelling.
Fishing and Nature at the Aquamuseu
Aquamuseu do Rio Minho is located in Parque de Lazer do Castelinho. Museu das Pescas permanently displays old and more recent equipment used in commercial and recreational fishing, items related to artisanal fishing, boat models and black-and-white photographs. In the aquarium, visitors can discover the most representative biotopes of the Rio Minho, from its source to its mouth. This brings together different perspectives on the river: fishing and its equipment and items, as well as the habitats along the Rio Minho.
Parque de Lazer do Castelinho combines sports and leisure facilities with educational features about nature and water resources. Facilities include a water park, an educational pond and Aquamuseu do Rio Minho. There are also sports fields for several sports, a mini-golf course, a playground and a leisure park.
Paths and Views Along the Minho
Ecopista do Rio Minho stretches for 13 kilometres along the riverbank in the municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira. It is part of the Natura 2000 network and the Minho estuary’s protected waterbird area. Ecopista Caminho do Rio runs along the left bank of the Minho and covers the riverside parishes of the municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira. Along its route, it connects, among other places, Parque de Lazer do Castelinho and Praia da Lenta. Near Vila Nova de Cerveira, Praia Fluvial da Lenta offers long walks along the interpretive trail of Ribeira Minho.
Marginal do Rio Minho – Doca de Recreio is about one kilometre long, with several sculptures displayed along the route. This puts two different scales side by side: about one kilometre for Marginal and 13 kilometres for Ecopista do Rio Minho.
At Miradouro do Cervo, an iron sculpture by sculptor José Rodrigues stands beside the viewpoint. From there, you can see much of the Minho, from the crossing at Valença to the estuary at Caminha. The forecourt of Capela e Miradouro da Senhora da Encarnação has a picnic area with tables, benches and barbecue spots, as well as a stone fountain. From here, the view extends over the Minho, the islands of Boega and Amores, the plain of Gondarém, Ponte da Amizade and Galicia.
Cultural Sites Nearby
Near Vila Nova de Cerveira lies Atalaia de Lovelhe, a fortification in Serra da Gávea that was probably built during the Portuguese Restoration War. Serra da Gávea is also home to about forty rock engravings, divided into four groups and considered evidence of Bronze Age settlement. At Moinhos da Gávea, you can learn about the corn cycle and traditional milling methods, including hydraulic systems and waterwheel mills.
