Alvarães: Festivals, Ceramic History and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Alvarães
If you are looking for a hotel in Alvarães, festivals and local history can shape your travel plans. The Via Sacra and the Festa das Cruzes take place at different times; ceramic history, religious memorials and a megalithic tomb monument add further points of interest. This allows you to tailor your travel dates and the themes of your stay to your interests.
Religious festivals and their dates
The Via Sacra is a religious procession featuring live representations. It takes place annually on the weekend before Easter, with around 150 participants. The Festa das Cruzes is celebrated in Alvarães on the third weekend of May. The entire community is involved in making the festival floats and crosses. The two events offer different perspectives on local traditions: the Via Sacra focuses on the procession and its representations, while the Festa das Cruzes centres on the community’s work on the floats and crosses. If you are planning to travel specifically for one of the festivals, check the exact event dates for your travel year.
Landscape and a specific local landmark
Alvarães lies on the right bank of the Rio Neiva. The terrain is mostly flat and clay-rich, with gentle rises. The river setting and terrain provide a brief impression of the local landscape. Another specific local name is Lagoa da Costeira: it is a park at Rua das Lagoas, 4905-204.
Ceramic history: from kilns to factory
The Fornos Telheiros de Alvarães are a reminder of the traditional craft of making roof tiles and hand-moulded bricks. The kilns were built at the end of the 19th century and remained in operation until the middle of the 20th century. Two former ceramic kilns were rebuilt at the site to remind present and future generations of this heritage. Their history thus links a former production site with a reconstruction explicitly intended to preserve its memory.
Another facet of ceramic history is the Fábrica Jerónimo Pereira Campos & Filhos, built in 1935. It produced red and refractory bricks, stoneware pipes, artisanal ceramics and sanitary ware. The product range extended from building materials to ceramics and sanitary ware. Together with the Fornos Telheiros, which focused on brickmaking, the factory illustrates different aspects of local ceramic history, with each production site telling a different story.
Religious memorials and a megalithic tomb
There are 21 Alminhas in Alvarães. The Alminhas do Calvário include a granite inscription dating from 1669, providing a specific historical reference point. A much older relic is the Mamoa de Alvarães: this megalithic tomb monument is around 5,000 years old. It lies in the Freguesia Alvarães, near the place of Paço and the Resulima facilities, and belongs to a larger group of similar monuments in the Vale do Neiva. The inscription and the tomb monument thus represent very different timescales within the local cultural heritage.
