Discover Afife: Beach and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Afife
Afife brings together beaches, a waterside landscape and a rich cultural heritage. At Praia de Afife, access through the dunes and surf conditions that vary by season take centre stage; the PR24 – Castros Trail highlights cultural sites in the parish. There are also archaeological sites, local craft traditions and festivals with fixed links to the Easter calendar. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus mainly on the coast, nature or Afife’s cultural heritage.
Beach and waterside landscape
At Praia de Afife, wooden boardwalks cross the dunes to the beach without damaging them. The beach offers surfing conditions that vary according to the season. The southern part of the beach is suitable for children because a stream flows into it, sometimes forming a small lagoon.
At the Cabanas River, Poço Azul consists of several lagoons and waterfalls. The water is clear and has a blue-green hue. While access through the dunes and surf conditions that vary by season shape the choice of beach at Praia, the river landscape, lagoons and waterfalls take centre stage at Poço Azul.
Trails and archaeological heritage
The PR24 – Castros Trail starts and ends at Monte de Santo António in the parish of Afife. It showcases the parish’s landscape, ecological and cultural riches. Highlights include the Monastery of São João de Cabanas, the rock carvings of Afife and Cividade de Afife.
The rock carvings are on a rock beside a forest path, near the access path to Cividade. Cividade de Afife is a fortified settlement of the Castro culture. Two distinct cultural themes are represented here: rock carvings and a fortified settlement.
Another archaeological landmark is Mamoa da Eireira, a megalithic burial monument at the northern entrance to the municipality of Afife. Unlike Cividade, a fortified settlement of the Castro culture, the Mamoa represents a different form of archaeological heritage.
History, crafts and traditions
Casino Afifense was officially inaugurated on 22 December 1935 and became a centre of cultural expression in Afife. Another cultural thread is decorative stucco work: from the mid-18th century onwards, it developed into a distinct profession in Afife. The Traje à Vianesa also has its own variant from Afife. Together, these cultural themes range from a historic centre and local crafts to an Afife version of this traditional costume.
The Sarração da Velha procession passes along the roads of Afife on Ash Wednesday at around 9:30 p.m., ending at Mesa do Cruzeiro. There, the testament is read aloud and the traditional Auto de Fé is performed. Queima do Judas takes place at Mesa de Pedra do Cruzeiro on the Saturday before Easter Sunday. These traditions follow a different schedule from surfing, whose conditions vary by season: their dates are tied to the Easter calendar.
