Alvaredo brings together medieval origins and local festivals with Alvarinho wine and the fishing culture of the Rio Minho. This gives you several specific considerations when planning your trip: festivals throughout the year, wine tourism, and the Pesqueiras along the river. The Rio Minho riverbanks and the Pesqueiras are among the town’s main attractions.

History and local festivals

Alvaredo has medieval origins. Its first documented mention dates to 1118. The town’s name may also be connected with wine: it could derive from the grape variety Alvarelhão, also known as Brancelho. This derivation is a possibility, not a confirmed explanation. Alvaredo is also known for producing Alvarinho wine.

Two festivals are associated with particular months. The Festa de São João takes place in June at the Capela de São João Batista. The Festa de São Martinho is celebrated in November in honor of Alvaredo’s patron saint. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the event dates in advance.

Alvarinho, tastings, and cuisine

Soalheiro is located in Charneca, Alvaredo, and offers a varied range of wine tourism experiences. These include wine tastings with panoramic views of the area, a visit to the winery, and a walk through its first vineyards. The tasting pairs the wine with views across the area; the winery and vineyards are other named parts of the experience. You can choose different activities depending on whether you are interested in a tasting, a visit, or a walk.

At Quintas de Melgaço, the Prova Descoberta tasting explores Alvarinho blends; it is offered in Ferreiros de Cima, Alvaredo. The two experiences can be distinguished by their stated focus: Prova Descoberta centers on the blends, while Soalheiro’s wine tourism offering also includes panoramic views, the winery, and vineyards.

Soalheiro also offers a culinary journey through Minho cuisine, featuring traditional smoked meats, cheese, and organic fruit and vegetables grown on site. Regional cuisine is therefore a specific part of the offering alongside wine. Menus and availability may change; check what is offered on your preferred date in advance.

Rio Minho and Pesqueiras

The banks of the Rio Minho and its Pesqueiras are among Alvaredo’s main attractions. The Pesqueiras are associated with a fishing practice recognized as intangible cultural heritage. It encompasses the knowledge practiced by fishers along the international stretch of the Rio Minho and the traditional fishing techniques associated with it. This recognition brings the inherited fishing practice into focus alongside the structures themselves.

One named example is the Pesqueira Malpaga in Alvaredo. It is a stone fishing structure used for river fishing, consists of three sections, and measures 17 m Ă— 3 m Ă— 3 m. Malpaga illustrates the structural side of the subject; the cultural heritage recognition concerns fishing knowledge and traditional techniques.
