Discover Vila Nova de Cerveira
Accommodation in Vila Nova de Cerveira
Vila Nova de Cerveira offers plenty to explore during a stay combining history, art and landscapes along the Rio Minho. Highlights include a medieval castle, museums and churches, as well as trails through river and mountain scenery. You can tailor your trip to the cultural or nature-based experiences that interest you most.
Castle, viewpoint and riverside scenery
Castelo de Cerveira was built around 1320 at the behest of the monarch D. Dinis. Its purpose was to defend the newly founded settlement of Vila Nova de Cerveira. The structure has an oval layout with a perimeter of about 260 metres and eight square towers. On Alto do Crasto stands Cervo, a sculpture by José Rodrigues. Its hilltop location makes it an excellent viewpoint.
For walks and hikes, the Ecopista – Caminho do Rio offers a direct connection with the river: in Vila Nova de Cerveira, it runs for about 13.5 kilometres in close contact with the Rio Minho and the surrounding natural environment. The route is part of the Natura 2000 network and a protected zone for waterbirds in the Rio Minho estuary. There are also numerous hiking trails through mountain and river landscapes in the various parishes of the municipality. The Ecopista is therefore a named route of about 13.5 kilometres along the river; other trails pass through different landscapes across the municipality.
Museums and art on the Rio Minho
Aquamuseu do Rio Minho presents the natural and ethnographic heritage associated with traditional fishing in the Rio Minho basin. Its fisheries museum has a permanent exhibition of historic and modern fishing equipment, objects used in artisanal fishing, boat models and black-and-white photographs. A visitor route traces the course of the river from its source to its mouth; outside, there is also an otter enclosure. Parque de Lazer do Castelinho includes a water park, an interpretive pond and Aquamuseu as part of the leisure park.
Museu Bienal de Cerveira holds around 700 national and international works of contemporary art. They illustrate the development of the visual arts over the past 40 years. The museum’s programme includes an annual multidisciplinary offering and the organisation of the Cerveira International Art Biennale. Visitors can therefore explore fishing history and river nature in the town’s museums, as well as contemporary art.
Religious architecture and local history
Igreja Matriz has three naves, a Baroque altarpiece and a Baroque façade flanked by two bell towers. Igreja da Misericórdia houses two older devotional images: Nossa Senhora do Leite, from the 15th century, is made of Ançã stone. Senhor Ecce-Homo is a wooden figure dating from the late 16th century, covered by a cloak.
Nearby, the Aro Arqueológico de Lovelhe lies between Ponte da Amizade and Praia da Lenta, outside the central town centre. Its archaeological remains illustrate around 2,100 years of history. Also nearby is Forte de Lovelhe, a bastioned fortress built between 1660 and 1662. On 13 February 1809, it prevented Soult’s troops from crossing the Rio Minho opposite Vila Nova de Cerveira.
Getting there and planning your stay
Vila Nova de Cerveira can be reached by car, bus or train. Road access includes connections to the A3 and A28, as well as an international bridge to Galicia. A ferry connects Vila Nova de Cerveira with Goyan in Galicia across the Rio Minho; check the timetable before planning a crossing. You can choose from these travel options according to your route, while the castle, museums, religious buildings and landscapes offer different focal points for your stay.
