When planning a trip to Pedroso, you can focus on a range of themes: an old Benedictine monastery, archaeological remains, a Marian shrine or an event date. A wooded park with picnic tables and benches is another feature of the area. The differences between the historic sites and the events can help you choose the right focus for planning your trip.

Monastery and architectural history

The Mosteiro de Pedroso in Pedroso is classified as a Monument of Public Interest. This classification was established by Portaria n.º 309/2014. The Benedictine monastery is considered to have very ancient origins and is already mentioned in documents from 897. These are two different points of reference: 897 marks its mention in a document, while 2014 marks its classification as a Monument of Public Interest.

Surviving elements of the early Romanesque period include a coat of arms on the side façade, a baptismal font inside, and two more on the inner side of the entrance porch. The description thus covers both a detail on the exterior façade and baptismal fonts in two interior areas. If you are interested in architectural history, the monastery offers specific architectural details as well as a long documentary record.

Archaeological remains

The Castro da Senhora da Saúde, also known as Monte Murado, is an archaeological fortified settlement. It is located in the Freguesia de Pedroso, in the Município de Vila Nova de Gaia. Both names refer to the same settlement. By comparison, the Mamoa da Raposa is a megalithic monument from the Neo-Chalcolithic period: the two sites therefore represent different archaeological types—a fortified settlement and a megalithic monument.

Measurements of the Mamoa da Raposa have also been recorded. It measures 16 metres along the north–south axis and 12 metres along the perpendicular axis. The longer of the two stated axes is therefore four metres longer. Together with its classification as a monument from the Neo-Chalcolithic period, these details provide a concise overview of what distinguishes the Mamoa and how its dimensions are given.

Shrine and pilgrimage

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde is a Marian shrine built of stone and lime in the 19th century. The shrine contains three altars with gilded woodcarving. The construction period and materials provide an architectural point of reference, while the altars add specific details about its furnishings. In the features described, the shrine therefore differs from both the early Romanesque monastery and the archaeological sites.

A pilgrimage takes place at the shrine on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The annual programme may vary. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the specific event dates for your travel year.

Park and event dates

Parque da Senhora da Saúde is a large, wooded area. Several tables and benches are spread along the Alameda and are suitable for picnics. This makes the park a different point of interest from the architectural and religious heritage: the focus here is on its wooded character and the seating available for a break outdoors.

The Petrus Run takes place annually, usually in April; exact dates may vary. It is a 10-kilometre athletics event held on the streets of the Freguesia. The programme also includes a charity walk, with part of the entry fees donated to a local association. The charitable arrangements may change.

The two events are easy to distinguish when choosing dates: the pilgrimage is associated with 15 August, while the Petrus Run usually takes place in April.
