Accommodation in Perre
Perre combines marked hiking trails with viewpoints and historic themes. The Freguesia of Perre is home to PR15 “Passear Perre 1” and PR16 “Passear Perre 2”, both marked hiking trails in the Short Route category. PR15 follows international trail-marking and signage standards. PR16 is also part of the municipal hiking trail network of Viana do Castelo. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Hiking trails and views
The viewpoints offer different perspectives: From Monte do Calvário, the hiking trails in Perre provide views across the entire Lima Valley. Miradouro da Bela Vista offers views of the city of Viana do Castelo. Together, the broad view over the valley and the view of the city provide two distinct landscape impressions.
Structures and landscape features are also among the notable points along the hiking trails. Ponte do Arco is a bridge of medieval origin and a highlight of the trails in Perre. Watermills are also among its most important sights. The trails therefore offer more than just views, including visible examples of architectural and milling heritage.
Another element of cultural heritage is the Traje de Domingar de Perre, a Sunday outfit dating from the late 19th century. It adds an example of historic clothing explicitly associated with Perre to the architectural and landscape themes.
Castro do Vieito and its history
Castro do Vieito is a traditional fortified settlement on a small hill in the Serra de Perre. Its defensive system consists of two walls; to the north, the site is reinforced by a ditch and complemented by a tower.
The Centro de Interpretação do Castro do Vieito opened in 2017 in the former Escola das Portelas. Its purpose was to preserve, enhance and interpret the archaeological site as a museum. A description from 2017 refers to two exhibition rooms about the settlement and its history, its inhabitants and domestic life. Other topics included stoneworking, castrejo pottery and metalworking.
Another circular route
“Pelas Veigas de Perre e Ponte do Arco” is a circular route whose starting point is described in a 2022 account as being near Capela de S. Francisco Xavier in the Freguesia of Perre. The account identifies the waterfall on the Moinho de Vidro stream as a highlight of the route. The waterfall thus provides a distinct landscape feature alongside the viewpoints at Monte do Calvário and Miradouro da Bela Vista.
Geographical setting
The Freguesia of Perre lies on the right bank of the Lima River. Together with its two marked hiking trails, varied views and archaeological and cultural themes, this gives a clear picture of the Freguesia as a travel destination.
