Sendim: Roman Villa, Manor Houses and River Landscape
Accommodation in Sendim
Explore Sendim through several distinct themes: Roman archaeology, historic residential and religious buildings, and a landscape shaped by a river, hills and wooded terrain. For your planning, you can consider these highlights separately: the Roman Villa is the archaeological focal point, while the manor house and parish church reflect different periods of construction and history. Bugio and the Rota dos Moinhos, in turn, offer different geographical perspectives.
Roman Villa and Archaeological Context
The Roman Villa of Sendim is located on a small spur at the foot of Monte do Crasto. Since 31 December 1997, it has been classified as an ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂşblico (Property of Public Interest). Its specific location is thus linked to its protected status.
Restored archaeological finds from the villa are displayed in the associated Interpretive Centre. The centre opened to the public in 2003. If you are planning a visit, please check access arrangements in advance.
Manor House, House and Parish Church
The Solar de Sergude is characteristic of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, while also preserving early Gothic remains from the 13th and 14th centuries. It was the residence of the first lords of Felgueiras. When considering its architectural history, it is worth distinguishing these dates: the manor house’s classification and its older surviving Gothic elements describe different historical layers.
The Casa da Cabeça de Porca dates from the 18th century; the house includes a courtyard well and a chapel. Sendim Parish Church was built in the 16th century at the behest of the University of Coimbra. These three buildings therefore represent different periods and types of building.
River, Valley and Rota dos Moinhos
The Bugio River flows through Sendim towards Jugueiros, where it joins the Vizela River. The Vale de Sendim lies between the hills of Calvário and Crasto and the wooded Monte de Santa Quitéria. The river and the valley describe different aspects of the landscape: the watercourse on the one hand, and the setting between hills and a wooded mountain on the other.
The Rota dos Moinhos begins in the area of Alto de Sergude and Alto do Crasto in Sendim. Alongside the river, this named starting area provides another point of reference for finding your way around the landscape.
Rural Character and Local Events
Codeçais is a rural village and is classified as an Aldeia de Portugal (Village of Portugal). This adds a rural perspective to the archaeological and architectural themes.
The Festa de S. Tiago in Sendim takes place on the first weekend of August. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance. The Sendim downhill course hosted a round of the Minho BTT DHI Championship. These represent two different time references: a set weekend for the celebration and a past competition held on the course.
