Gueifães brings together historic buildings and religious traditions with the history of the Banda Marcial and a municipal swimming complex. Depending on whether you want to include churches and their history, events or swimming in your travel plans, the focus of your stay may also vary.

Churches and History

The oldest parish church in Gueifães was already in existence in 1527 and was connected to the Monastery of Leça do Balio, which provided its spiritual care. Its bell tower dates from 1864. The carvings on the altars are distinguished by their harmonious lines. The church therefore brings together a long history, a spiritual connection and specific details of its design.

The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Saúde has its own architectural history: construction began in 1974, and the final building work was completed in 1990. Several stained-glass windows by Horácio Viegas were added to the church in 2000 and 2001. On 15 February 2003, the improvement works were inaugurated at the church’s solemn consecration by D. Armindo Lopes Coelho, Bishop of Porto. Its construction and furnishing phases thus belong to a much more recent period than the history of the oldest parish church.

The Escola Príncipe da Beira is also a historical landmark: King D. Carlos and Queen Dona Amélia inaugurated it on 6 March 1894. A camellia specimen can also be found at the school. A precisely dated event in the school’s history and a botanical detail sit side by side here.

Music and Festive Traditions

The Banda Marcial de Gueifães was founded on 12 December 1837 and has been active ever since. It performs at pilgrimages, festivals, concerts and other events—in Maia and elsewhere. Each year, the Banda Marcial organizes the Semana da Música, which is part of Maia’s cultural program. Dates vary from one edition to another.

The Festas em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Saúde in Gueifães have a different character: they are a religious tradition dating back to the 16th century, and their dates also vary each year. The distinction is useful for planning a trip: the Semana da Música is a musical event, while the Festas have a religious character. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the dates for that year’s edition.

Swimming and Regional Orientation

A municipal description, last updated in 2018, lists a comprehensive range of aquatic and swimming services at the Complexo Municipal de Piscinas de Gueifães. It describes a competition pool measuring 25 m × 14.5 m and 1.2 to 1.6 m deep, as well as a teaching pool measuring 14 m × 6 m and 0.60 to 0.87 m deep. The dimensions distinguish the two pools in both length and width, as well as in their depth ranges. If swimming is part of your travel plans, check the current access conditions before visiting.

Regional orientation: Maia. The municipality of Maia lies 6 km north of Porto and is part of the Área Metropolitana do Porto. Maia is accessible via Aeroporto Internacional Francisco Sá Carneiro, Aeródromo Municipal Vilar de Luz, motorways and light rail. This regional perspective complements the local themes of Gueifães.
