Marco De Canaveses: Culture, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Marco De Canaveses
Marco De Canaveses combines modern church architecture with medieval buildings, archaeological remains and leisure activities by the water. This offers different focuses for planning your trip: you can take an interest in architecture and history, or explore the Tâmega and outdoor activities.
Churches between modern design and the Middle Ages
The Igreja de Santa Maria was designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira and consecrated on 7 July 1996. Its smooth, white and light-filled surfaces stand out from the neighbouring buildings. Both its clean design and the contrast described shape the impression the building makes. The Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Vila Boa do Bispo reflects a different period of construction: its Romanesque phase is dated to the 12th and 13th centuries.
The Igreja de Santo André de Vila Boa de Quires also belongs to the medieval architectural heritage. It was built in the second quarter of the 13th century as part of a monastery complex. Its main façade is considered one of the most elaborate in Baixo Tâmega and resembles that of the Igreja de Barrô in Resende. The Igreja de Santa Maria de Sobretâmega brings together a different setting and a later foundation: it stands on the right bank of the Tâmega at the entrance to the former Canaveses Bridge and was founded after 1320. Its main chapel houses a gilded wooden altarpiece in the national style.
Tongobriga and the Museu Carmen Miranda
The ruins of the Roman city of Tongobriga cover about 15 hectares; the archaeological site has been classified as a National Monument since 1986. Excavations have identified a Castro and Roman residential areas, a wall, a forum, pre-Roman and Roman baths, and a necropolis. The visit includes access to the interpretation centre and the archaeological area with the ruins. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.
Another cultural highlight is the Museu Carmen Miranda. It is dedicated almost exclusively to Carmen Miranda, who is the focus of its exhibition spaces. The selection therefore brings together archaeological remains and a museum focused on a single individual.
Memorial sites and streets
The Memorial de Alpendorada belongs to a type of monument found only in Portugal, built in the 13th century for funerary and commemorative purposes. One specific architectural detail is the sword engraved on the upper stones of the base supporting the memorial's arch. Canaveses – Aldeia de Portugal also brings together different place names and their history: on the Sobretâmega side, it includes Rua Direita; on the São Nicolau side, the former Tamacana street, now called Rua de São Nicolau.
Water and outdoor spaces
Praia Fluvial de Bitetos is used for canoeing, water skiing and motorboating, and is designated “Praia Acessível/Praia Para Todos” (Accessible Beach/Beach for Everyone). Parque Fluvial do Tâmega offers different facilities: a picnic area, a footpath, a fitness and exercise trail, and a children's playground. There is also a marina with space for 40 boats and fishing platforms. When weighing up your interests for the trip, the activities mentioned differ clearly: Bitetos is associated with water sports, while the park includes areas for relaxing, exercise, play and boating.
