Alfena can be explored through its distinctive buildings and cultural venues: the Ponte de São Lázaro crosses the Leça, chapels bring together different historical layers, and the Centro Cultural de Alfena is housed in a former primary school. Other points of interest include Parque Vale do Leça and FestINvallis – Festival Internacional de Folclore, held every two years. These landmarks span bridge-building and religious history, as well as a cultural centre, a river and folklore. If you are looking for a hotel in Alfena, these themes can help you shape your stay around your interests.

Bridge and River

The Ponte de São Lázaro provides a crossing over the River Leça in Alfena. It has a stone structure with two arches of unequal size. The difference in the arches’ dimensions adds a distinctive architectural feature to the crossing. The Rio Leça also runs through Parque Vale do Leça. The river thus features in two different settings: the Ponte de São Lázaro provides a crossing over it, while it runs through the park.

Chapels and Historical Connections

The Capela de S. Lázaro leads back to an earlier historical period. Its origins date to the Middle Ages, and it was also connected to a leprosarium in the surrounding area. In 1623, the chapel was renovated by order. Its medieval origins and later renovation therefore mark two distinct periods in its architectural history. It is also historically associated with religious buildings along the pilgrimage routes of the Caminho de Santiago. Under its porch, the faithful rested after long walks. This historical resting place adds a religious and practical dimension of pilgrimage to the building’s history.

The Capela de N.ª Sr.ª da Conceição offers a different historical perspective. Captain Vicente Ferreira Alfena and Luzia Antónia do Sacramento commissioned its construction in 1733. The chapel stands on the edge of an old road that came from Ermesinde. Inside are images of Sr.ª da Conceição, Sr.ª das Dores and S. Vicente Ferrer. The two chapels thus also differ in their specific historical connections: at S. Lázaro, the focus is on its medieval origins and the pilgrimage context; at N.ª Sr.ª da Conceição, it is the 1733 commission, its location on the old road and the three images.

Cultural Centre and Festival

The Centro Cultural de Alfena is housed in a former primary school. It has an auditorium, as well as reading, exhibition and leisure spaces. Unlike the chapels, its focus is a former school building and a range of spaces for cultural and leisure activities. The cultural centre thus offers a distinct point of interest alongside Alfena’s religious and architectural history.

FestINvallis – Festival Internacional de Folclore takes place in Alfena every two years, between the last Sunday in July and the first Saturday in August. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your chosen year and allow for its two-year cycle.
