Lordelo: Heritage, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Lordelo
Lordelo offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: Torre dos Alcoforados, part of the Rota do Românico; trails along two waterways; and leisure and nature activities in Parque do Rio Ferreira. Its industrial past and a named exercise facility also help shape the character of the place. If you are looking for a hotel in Lordelo, you can start by choosing the kind of trip you have in mind: culture, waterside trails, or leisure and exercise.
Heritage: the Tower and Information Centre
Torre dos Alcoforados is located in the Torre district of the municipality of Lordelo. It is also known as Torre Alta or Torre dos Mouros, belongs to the Rota do Românico, and is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. This means that the building is both part of a named cultural route and formally protected. The Rota do Românico Information Centre is housed in a former manor house next to the tower and opened in 2016. Its main purpose is to welcome and assist visitors and tourists. For orientation, these are two separate points of interest: the protected building and the centre, which serves visitors.
Riverside trails and routes in Lordelo
The Eco-caminhada runs for approximately 1,160 metres along the banks of the Rio Ferreira and approximately 780 metres along the banks of the Ribeira das ĂŤnsuas. Both distances are approximate; they also distinguish between the two waterways. The section along the Rio Ferreira is longer than the one along the Ribeira das ĂŤnsuas. A municipal notice dated 17 June 2024 also describes the Trilho das Pedreiras as a route of approximately 10 km that starts in Lordelo and passes through the municipalities of Vilela, Duas Igrejas, Vila Cova de Carros, Cristelo and Besteiros. The distinction is useful when comparing the routes: the Eco-caminhada is described in terms of two riverside sections, while the Trilho is described by its overall length and the places it passes through.
Leisure, nature and exercise
Parque do Rio Ferreira covers a large area connecting the neighbouring municipalities of Lordelo and Rebordosa, and is used for leisure and sporting activities. Animals found there include, among others, robins, kestrels, little owls, barn owls, jays and hedgehogs. The combination of leisure and sporting facilities with wildlife gives the park both an active and a nature-focused appeal.
Alameda de Portugal complements the waterside trails with a different kind of exercise facility: a short, winding path emphasises the slope of the site, and the Alameda also has a fitness and exercise trail.
Mills and the history of grain
The Moinhos (Penhas Altas/Lordelo) are watermills visible along the banks of various waterways, bearing witness to the end of the grain production cycle. They complement the tower with a different aspect of the area’s heritage: the tower is notable for its association with the Rota do Românico and its protected status, while the mills are notable for their connection with waterways and grain production. This means Lordelo’s cultural side can be explored not only through a single building but also through its history of production.
