Rans: Honra de Barbosa and S. Miguel
Accommodation in Rans
When planning your trip to Rans, several themes come together: Honra de Barbosa, historic routes and the S. Miguel festival. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether architectural history, a particular festival date or both will be the focus of your trip. Different preparations are advisable for visiting the Honra and attending the festival.
Honra de Barbosa: Residence and architecture
Honra de Barbosa is located in Barbosa, in the parish of Rans, in the municipality of Penafiel, in the district of Porto. The manor residence was founded in the 12th century by Mem Moniz de Ribadouro and was classified as a site of public interest in 2014. Its founding and subsequent construction history belong to different periods: the central crenellated tower was rebuilt between the 15th and 16th centuries, while the Chapel of Menino Deus dates from the 17th century.
The tower is divided into two storeys and topped with Manueline-style battlements. The storeys describe its layout, while the battlements form its uppermost section. The date of the rebuilding and the term “Manueline” also serve different purposes: the former places the renovation in time, while the latter describes the style of the battlements. Together with the chapel, these details offer several ways to explore the architecture of the complex, rather than reducing it to a single building phase.
If you would like to visit Honra de Barbosa, you should register in advance. Make sure to include this registration in your plans.
Infrastructure and historic routes
The new section of the IC35 between Penafiel and Rans opened to traffic on 1 July 2024. This is distinct from the historic route from Meinedo to Eja, which passed through Rans and crossed the River Cavalum at Ponte Nova. At Ponte de Lardosa, also known as Ponte Velha, it crossed a tributary of the Cavalum; this bridge is now abandoned. The bridges therefore represent different crossings: Ponte Nova crosses the Cavalum itself, while Ponte de Lardosa crosses a tributary. The opening of the IC35, by contrast, is a more recent infrastructure development with a specific date.
Festival date and activities
S. Miguel is celebrated in Rans on the first weekend of May. Check the programme for the relevant year before your trip so you can take the festival date into account when planning. This ensures that the specific programme for that year guides your plans if you wish to coordinate your travel dates with the festival.
At Quinta Vale de Rans, additional activities such as hiking and cycling can be booked. These options add a different dimension to the local history: they are bookable activities, while Honra de Barbosa and the historic routes offer historical points of interest.
The distinctions are useful when choosing your travel dates and preparing for your stay: S. Miguel provides a date to plan around—the first weekend of May; advance registration is advisable for visiting the Honra; and activities can be booked directly at Quinta Vale de Rans. This helps you decide how each of these options fits with the reason for your stay in Rans.
