The Igreja Antiga, a windmill and a variety of trails offer tangible connections to cultural history and the landscape. Consider whether you would like to include architectural history, craft traditions or a route in your plans.

Church, churchyard and cultural heritage

Construction of the Igreja Antiga de Pedreiras began in 1602 and was completed in 1604. The centuries-old, large oak trees in the churchyard of the parish of Pedreiras are also part of the area’s history: they gave rise to the Feira dos Carvalhos.

A workshop held by the parish on the history, trades and arts of Pedreiras included two presentations in January 2025. Kevin Carreira Soares spoke about “A História das Pedreiras através dos seus documentos,” while Luísa Machado spoke about “Cerâmica de Pedreiras: evolução dos tipos, seus vidrados e decoração.” The topics offer insight into different aspects of local history: documents on the one hand, and the development of ceramics, glazes and decoration on the other.

Windmill tradition and crafts

The Moinho das Pedreiras is one of the working windmills in the municipality of Porto de MĂłs. It is still possible to use millstones there to traditionally process grain into flour. The windmill tradition on the hills is associated with rural craftspeople and their knowledge. The Moinho thus highlights both grain processing and inherited craftsmanship.

Another historical landmark is the oil mill at Casa Féteira in Pedreiras. It dates from 1912 and complements the windmill with a different type of mill and a specific date.

Walking trails with different routes

The PR5 PMS – Percurso da Serra dos Candeeiros is a circular walking trail that starts in Pedreiras. Its starting point is next to the Parque de Campismo de Pedreiras. The route runs along the foot of the Serra dos Candeeiros, passing through farmland, olive groves, orchards and wooded areas. The description therefore combines a clearly defined route with several types of landscape.

The second stage of the Caminhos de Fátima offers a different option. It is 15 kilometres long and heads north from Pedreiras, around the Serra dos Candeeiros, through the main settlement of the parish and then south, past the Fórnea and Alvados depressions. The Caminhos de Fátima connect the Marian shrines of Nazaré and Fátima and are divided into three stages.

For planning purposes, the two descriptions differ considerably: the PR5 is designated as a circular walking trail, while the second stage is described primarily in terms of its 15-kilometre length and route. This can help you decide which type of route and landscape features better suit your stay.

Practical information for your visit

When it opened in 2022, the Circuito de Manutenção – Pedreiras was presented as having 14 stations and three difficulty levels. If you plan to include it in your itinerary, check access conditions in advance.

The Parque de Campismo das Pedreiras is set in natural surroundings next to a picnic area, a Circuito de Manutenção and a windmill. Prior contact with the Junta de Freguesia de Pedreiras is required to access the Parque de Campismo. Include this requirement in your plans if you would like to visit the park.
