Juncal: Churches, Ceramics and History
Accommodation in Juncal
Juncal brings together local history and crafts with opportunities to stay active. Prehistoric and Roman remains have been found in its fertile valleys; churches and ceramics point to further layers of history. The tradition of making baskets from rush and an artwork inspired by this craft add to the cultural picture. The PR Fonte Falsa hiking trail and Parque Verde do Juncal offer opportunities for walking and leisure. When planning a stay in Juncal, you can choose how to balance local history, religious tradition, ceramics and outdoor activities.
Local History and Churches
Igreja de São Miguel stands on the site of an earlier chapel, which may have been dedicated to São Miguel as early as the 14th century. After it was damaged in the 1755 earthquake, the church was rebuilt between 1770 and 1780. Its features include figurative tile panels depicting scenes from the Old Testament in the nave and the New Testament in the main chapel. The arrangement of the images connects the decorative programme to two areas of the church.
West of Juncal, Capela de São Miguel do Peral stands on a small hill beside the road from the town centre to the Ribeiro Valley. A mass is celebrated there every year during the São Miguel do Juncal festival. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with the celebration, check the festival dates in advance.
Capela Nossa Senhora de Fátima is a private place of worship attached to a manor house. Commissioned by Joaquim Caetano, it was built to fulfil a promise made to Nossa Senhora de Fátima. The chapel was consecrated on 13 December 1942 during a pastoral visit to Juncal.
Ceramics, Crafts and Local Motifs
Juncal has a tradition of making baskets by hand from rush, a plant widely found in the parish. The artwork “Homenagem às Cestas de Junco” by Hélder Silva references the baskets in its title and is intended to make Juncal’s identity visible.
The ceramic exhibition “Maneira do Juncal- Um Legado Inquebrável” is housed at Real Factory Porto de Mós – Creative Hub. The exhibition space recalls the history of the Real Fábrica do Juncal from 1770 to 1876. The Real Factory is located in the former Casa dos Calados; following its renovation, the building’s original features were preserved. Another ceramic motif can be found in Juncal itself: the “Painel de Azulejos de Nossa Senhora das Dores” is on the facade of a house on Rua da Carreira da Vila, near the site of the former Fábrica do Juncal.
Views and Time Outdoors
Cruzeiro do Juncal is a tall cross on Monte Talho Redondo, associated with the faith of Juncal’s residents. From the cross, there are panoramic views over Juncal, including the parish church and the built-up area. For many years, the cross was a pilgrimage site during the Feast of Saint Isidore. Isidore is regarded as the patron saint of fields and farmers; this pilgrimage is recorded as a historical tradition.
The PR Fonte Falsa hiking trail is 7 km long and starts in Juncal. Check trail conditions before setting out. Another leisure option is Parque Verde do Juncal: this recreation area, suitable for all age groups, was inaugurated on 20 December 2015 and promotes an active lifestyle, health and well-being. You can therefore give your stay a cultural focus or include hiking and leisure, without reducing Juncal’s varied attractions to a single sight.
