For a stay in Mendiga, two different perspectives are worth exploring: cultural history, and landscape and recreation. The Arco da Memória and the present-day parish church represent different historical connections; Telhados de Água and the PR2 PMS circular trail turn your attention to recreation and the Mendiga Plateau.

Water Project and Recreation

Telhados de Água offers a distinctive feature. The project was designed with the aim of renewing rainwater so that it could be used by the people of Mendiga. At the same time, Telhados de Água is a recreational area for local residents and people interested in the environment.

The area includes a picnic area with a barbecue and toilet. It may be necessary to contact the União das Freguesias to use the facilities. Telhados de Água is therefore notable both for its rainwater project and for its practical recreational facilities.

Local History and Heritage

The Arco da Memória is located in the Freguesia Arrimal-Mendiga, in the Serra dos Candeeiros. Cistercian monks built it towards the end of the 16th century to mark the boundary of lands that had been given to Portugal’s first king, D. Afonso Henriques, in the 12th century. The two dates refer to different events: the arch was built in the late 16th century, while the marked lands were donated in the 12th century.

Mendiga’s present-day parish church is in the town centre, is dedicated to Saint Julian and was inaugurated in 1968. Compared with the Arco da Memória, it provides a clearly dated reference to the town’s more recent history; the details about its location and dedication complement the year of its inauguration.

The heights of Mendiga are also part of the town’s cultural character: the windmills found there include the Moinhos da Mendiga. Mendiga is also known for quarrying natural stone. The white paving known as “calçada branca” is particularly associated with the town and is used around the world. The local story thus ranges from historic buildings to natural stone and mills.

Landscape and Circular Trail

The PR2 PMS is a circular trail across the Mendiga Plateau. It begins at Cabeça das Pombas and runs west to the edge of the plateau. Its circular route, named starting point and direction give it a clear geographical setting.

Along the way, the trail passes through traditional olive groves and small stands of holm oak and cork oak. It also offers expansive views of the Mendiga Valley. The same route therefore brings together different landscape features: cultivated olive groves, smaller wooded areas and views towards the valley.

Highlights for Your Stay

When choosing a theme for your stay, the type of connection that interests you also matters: the Arco da Memória is defined by its construction date and historical context, while the PR2 PMS is characterised by its circular route, course and landscape. Telhados de Água complements these perspectives as a recreational area with picnic facilities and a rainwater project.
