Different travel interests come together in Mora: the Fluviário is dedicated to freshwater ecosystems, trails at Gameiro lead through riverside landscapes, and Pavia is home to a megalithic chamber that was converted into a Catholic temple in the Middle Ages. There is also pottery, church art and cultural venues. You can shape your stay differently depending on which of these topics interests you most.

Freshwater and outdoor trails

The Fluviário de Mora is a public aquarium focused on freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity. The exhibition showcases freshwater species from Portugal along the course of a river, from source to mouth. Other species come from the Iberian Peninsula, the Amazon Basin, the African Rift Lakes and Asia. This brings native waters and habitats from other regions of the world together. The Aquarist Experience gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look and tells them more about aquarium maintenance; details of this activity may change.

The Passadiço, also known as the Percurso do Gameiro, connects a 2,930-metre-long riverside zone: 1,500 metres of it is a wooden boardwalk and 1,430 metres is a walking trail. The route also includes a 2,570-metre-long Montado zone. Along the banks, you can spot willows and poplars, as well as amphibians, small fish and regional bird species; you can watch birds from a birdwatching post. The Miradouro de Mora offers views of irrigated fields and streams, as well as diverse wild flora and fauna.

Orientation along the EN2 can also help with planning. In the municipality of Mora, the Rota da Estrada Nacional 2 runs between kilometres 468 and 493. At kilometre 474, a two-kilometre detour leads to Parque Ecológico do Gameiro; the Ecopista de Mora starts at kilometre 475, beside the EN2. These details provide specific reference points without prescribing a particular visit duration.

Megaliths and sacred architectural history

In the centre of Paviastands the Anta-Capela de São Dinis. Its megalithic chamber dates from between the 4th and 3rd millennia BC and was converted into a Catholic temple dedicated to São Dinis in the Middle Ages. The Anta has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. Visits must be arranged in advance with the Junta de Freguesia de Pavia or the Mora municipal tourist office.

In Mora, the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Graça dates from 1570; its baptismal font dates from the late 16th century. The Igreja da Misericórdia preserves a mural of Nossa Senhora do Manto and a Renaissance marble washbasin. The Irmandade da Misericórdia de Mora was founded in 1575; the Igreja da Misericórdia de Mora was inaugurated in 1581. Visits also need to be arranged in advance, either with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Mora or the municipal tourist office.

A different architectural character awaits at the Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Brotas: the church combines vernacular religious architecture with Manueline and Baroque elements. Devotion to Nossa Senhora de Brotas dates back to the 15th century. The tiles inside the church, in the sacristy and on the outside of the narthex were conserved and restored in 2002–2003. The building's history, religious tradition and restoration can be explored here from different perspectives.

Crafts and cultural life

The Olaria das Brotas carries on a pottery tradition that is several centuries old; there were once around 40 potters in the village. Visitors can make pottery on a wheel, decorate clay objects and take part in guided tours. This makes the visit especially interesting if you are interested not only in finished pottery, but also in the craft behind it.

The Museu Interativo do Megalitismo de Mora presents life in a Neolithic village, archaeological objects and excavation methods through a 3D film and interactive tables. The renovated former Mora railway station is incorporated into the museum complex. The Casa da Cultura is housed in a former hospice that was converted into a cultural centre in 1987. Its facilities include a library, an exhibition gallery, a cinema-theatre, a music school, a municipal dance school and decorative arts courses. The Museu Agro-Florestal da Barroca presents permanent and temporary exhibitions about agricultural life in Mora. The Casa-Museu Manuel Ribeiro de Pavia displays paintings, original drawings, reproductions and illustrated books related to the artist's life and work.

Experiences and planning your stay

One culinary event is the annual Mostra Gastronómica da Caça. It is organised by the Câmara Municipal de Mora in close collaboration with local restaurants. Event dates and participating restaurants may change from year to year, so check the latest details if you want to plan your trip around it. Visitor activities at Adega Encosta do Pinhal are available year-round; confirm the schedule before your visit. The “Vista o Fato de Apicultor” experience includes a visit to the apiary, as well as collecting and bottling honey to take home.

This way, you can choose a hotel based on your travel plans, without the attractions requiring any particular hotel amenities or type of stay.
