Mora can be explored through different interests: megalithic culture and historic buildings are as much in focus as viewpoints, green spaces and water. When planning a trip to Mora, you can weigh up these themes and choose the places that suit your interests.

Megalithism at the heart of Mora

The Museu Interactivo do Megalitismo is conveniently located in the centre of Vila Mora. Its 750-square-metre exhibition space is divided into three areas representing everyday life, death and contemplation. Interactive tables provide information about the objects on display; some are more than 6,000 years old. They also explain how excavations are carried out. The museum thus brings together archaeological objects and insights into the work involved in uncovering such finds.

Historic sites and cultural venues

The Torre do Relógio is part of a 16th-century building that once housed Mora’s municipal administration. The building is now home to the Mora Tourist Office and the municipal library. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Graça dates from 1570 and features religious, 16th-century and neoclassical architectural elements. It also houses a baptismal font from the late 16th century.

The Igreja de Santo António de Mora was built in 1656 and served as a pilgrimage chapel. Its structure includes a nave, chancel, bell tower and sacristy. Visitors are asked to book in advance through the Mora Municipal Council’s Tourist Office; check with them beforehand to confirm current visiting arrangements. Advance booking is also required for the Igreja da Misericórdia de Mora, either through the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Mora or the Municipal Council’s Tourist Office. Check with them beforehand to confirm current visiting arrangements.

The history of the Igreja da Misericórdia goes back to the brotherhood founded in 1575; the church was consecrated in 1581. One of its bells comes from the former Convento de S. Bento de Castris in Évora and dates to 1391. The Casa da Cultura de Mora offers another way to experience local cultural life: it includes a library, an exhibition gallery, a cinema-theatre, a music school, a municipal dance school and decorative arts courses. Praça Central Conselheiro Fernando de Sousa is in the historic centre and commemorates the arrival of the railway in Mora in 1908.

Views, green spaces and water

The Miradouro de Mora is on the upper edge of Bairro da Misericórdia, at one of the highest points in Vila Mora, and offers expansive views. From there, you can see waterways, irrigated fields and a wide variety of wild animals and plants. The view takes in the landscape along with the visible water and agricultural areas, without any single natural feature defining the place on its own.

Jardim Público de Mora has green spaces, a playing field, a bar, toilets, a grandstand, a children’s playground and a lake. Parque Urbano de Mora is a shared green space with leisure and sports facilities. These two places offer different options to consider if you are planning to visit public green spaces and recreational areas during your trip.

Pista Internacional de Pesca Desportiva de Mora is located on the Ribeira da Raia, near Vila de Mora, in natural surroundings. It stretches for approximately one kilometre and has 60 fishing spots. The water depth ranges from two to four metres, and the bottom has gravel and sandy areas. These details give the facility a specific profile for angling, while the Miradouro is defined above all by its expansive views and landscape.

Experiences with wood and beekeeping

The experience “JVC – Por onde a madeira me leva” invites you to learn about the creative process and take part in it. The “Vista o Fato de Apicultor” experience includes a visit to an apiary; participants can collect honey and bottle it to take home. The two experiences have different focuses: one centres on a creative process with wood, while the other offers hands-on beekeeping. When planning your trip, you can choose between these different kinds of experiences.
