Cabeção between architectural history and Vinho de Talha
Accommodation in Cabeção
Cabeção offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: religious and civil architecture, local history, Vinho de Talha and the Mata Nacional. Its buildings feature different dates and architectural styles; wine experiences range from guided cellar visits to seasonal participation in the grape harvest. You can choose which themes to focus on according to your interests.
Churches and architectural history
The Brotherhood of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Cabeção was founded in the final years of the 16th century. With the approval of the Archbishop of Évora, D. Teotónio de Bragança, its church was built and consecrated in 1600. The Ermida de São Salvador do Mundo was built in the 14th century and has retained its Gothic portal since its construction. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação was already in existence in 1279. In the Igreja da Misericórdia de Cabeção, incomplete Luso-Roman mosaic floors dating from the 5th century AD are on display.
The small Torrinha do Castelo, also known as Torre da Laranjinha, has a simple square plan and four arches. According to local tradition, it is linked to the origins of the Vila de Cabeção. The Pelourinho de Cabeção features civil architecture with Baroque and revivalist elements. The original pillory was destroyed in 1874; it was rebuilt in 1961. The Antigo Teatro da Vila de Cabeção, formerly also known as Teatro-Cine, is thought to have been built between 1914 and 1915. It retains many of its original features and is considered a notable example of a Portuguese building in the Art Nouveau style. In the Capela do Senhor dos Passos, gilded woodcarving meets a rounded ceiling and a transitional style between Rococo and Neoclassicism.
Local history and cultural life
The Museu Casa António Vaz e Albertina Moreira is housed in a family home about 80 years old. It preserves a unique craft heritage, with furniture and decorations made through the handicrafts of António Vaz and Albertina Moreira. If you are planning a visit, confirm access arrangements in advance.
The Tanques da Vila de Cabeção were built in 1930 and served as a social meeting place reserved exclusively for women. Several washerwomen would gather there to wash clothes and socialize. The Fonte Velha lies in the oldest part of Cabeção, where the Vila’s first residents settled. The Centro Cultural de Cabeção houses the headquarters of the Grupo de Cantares de Cabeção and the Grupo Recreativo, as well as classes run by the Universidade Sénior de Mora. A multipurpose room is used for exhibitions and colloquia.
Vinho de Talha and cellar visits
Adega do Teso offers guided cellar tours with wine tastings and regional snacks. Groups can take part in the grape harvest by arrangement; this experience is seasonal. Confirm booking requirements, dates and current availability in advance. The production of Vinho de Talha is listed in Portugal’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The municipality of Mora also holds the annual Prova do Vinho Novo de Talha de Cabeção.
At the 29th edition of the Rota das Adegas in January 2026, participants could learn about each winery’s history, see the traditional Vinho de Talha production process up close and taste the wine with regional snacks. Depending on the route chosen, the event visited between four and seven wineries. Check future dates before planning your trip around the event.
Landscape and angling
The Mata Nacional de Cabeção is part of the Natura 2000 network and covers more than 258 hectares. The Pista Internacional de Pesca Desportiva de Cabeção offers a different focus: it stretches for about three kilometres and has a total of 190 fishing spots. Of these, 125 are along the two-kilometre Pista Velha and 65 along the one-kilometre Pista Nova. The venue has hosted numerous world championships. Its dimensions and sporting history give angling its own place alongside the landscape and architectural history.
