Cowbell craftsmanship, historic architecture and routes through the Alentejo give Viana do Alentejo a diverse cultural profile. In Alcáçovas, craftsmanship takes centre stage, while routes and pilgrimage traditions offer different ways of travelling. For your trip, you can combine these themes or focus on one: architecture, archaeological heritage or a festival date.

Craftsmanship and Architectural History

UNESCO describes Alcáçovas as Portugal’s most important centre for cowbell making. On 1 December 2015, this craft was added to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. The Museu do Chocalho houses a private collection of more than 5,800 cowbells. The Médico de Sousa pottery school is also part of the history of craftsmanship: it made pottery knowledge and training available to anyone who wanted to learn.

Art historians consider the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Anunciação an almost perfect example of late Gothic Alentejo architecture. Late Gothic, Italian Renaissance and Mudéjar elements come together here. The Paço dos Henriques offers a different historical connection: it is associated with the signing of the Treaty of Alcáçovas–Toledo between the Catholic Monarchs and D. Afonso V on 4 September 1479. The architectural ensemble also includes the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the Jardim das Conchas. Together, they are considered a distinctive example of Alentejo’s cultural diversity.

The Jardim das Conchas brings together around 26 shell varieties, tiles, glass elements and a water system. Castelo de Viana do Alentejo has a different architectural character: the structure consists of five curtain walls with cylindrical corner towers. The top section crowning the main tower is taller than the others and houses a bell with openings on all sides. The ensemble also includes the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Anunciação, the Igreja da Misericórdia de Viana do Alentejo, the Capela de Santo António and the former Capela de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, which now serves as an interpretation centre for the ensemble. The exhibitions include the permanent displays «Memórias Daqui e D’Além» and «Paço dos Henriques: História e Memória».

Routes, Pilgrimage and Festivals

The Rota da Peregrinação a Nossa Senhora D’Aires is 9.1 kilometres long and runs through Viana do Alentejo. Along the way, it showcases the Vila’s historical, cultural and natural heritage, as well as the green marble of former quarries. Hikers use the Circuito de Manutenção at Quinta da Joana throughout the year. The two routes offer different themes: one focuses on the Vila’s heritage, while the other is associated with year-round hiking.

The Caminho Nascente passes through Aguiar and Viana do Alentejo. It connects the municipality with Évora and Alvito and also links Baixo Alentejo with Alto Alentejo. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora D’Aires is another stop along the route. The Romaria a Cavalo connects Moita and Viana do Alentejo in a four-day procession covering around 150 kilometres and reaching the sanctuary. The 9.1 kilometres of the Rota and the approximately 150 kilometres of the Romaria represent two distinctly different ways of travelling.

The festival calendar includes the Festa da Primavera in Aguiar in June, with dancing, music, popular music and evening dances, as well as the Feira Franca de Nossa Senhora D’Aires on the last weekend of September. If you want a festival to determine your travel dates, check the specific event dates before booking your hotel.

Aguiar is also home to the Anta do Zambujeiro, a Neolithic communal tomb. It is considered one of the oldest built signs of human presence in the municipality of Viana do Alentejo. The supporting stones of the burial chamber appear to have survived, and there is also evidence of a possible passageway.

The themes of your trip can help guide your hotel planning: would you like to focus on architecture and craftsmanship, include archaeological heritage, or plan your stay around one of the traditions mentioned? Routes, festivals and historic sites offer different starting points, though they do not all have the same character.
