Cuba: Cante Alentejano, Churches and Wine Tradition
Accommodation in Cuba
Cuba brings together cultural traditions, church architecture, museums and opportunities for outdoor activities. Cante Alentejano is part of the town’s intangible cultural identity. You can also experience local crafts firsthand: craft shops sell handmade boots and shoes, agricultural tools, leather jackets and slippers. Cultural interests here therefore range from singing to objects made by local craftspeople.
Churches, Museums and Culture
The Igreja Matriz de Cuba was probably built in the 16th century, with construction continuing until the 18th century. This accounts for its Mannerist and Baroque appearance. The Igreja e Recolhimento do Carmo also dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. In Vila Ruiva, construction of the Igreja Matriz began in 1523 in the Manueline style, and the building is classified as a property of public interest. The different construction periods and styles give the local church landscape several historical points of reference.
The Casa Fialho de Almeida is a literary museum dedicated to the life and work of Fialho de Almeida. He lived in the house for 18 years, and it is classified as a monument of public interest. The museum is divided into three sections: one explores his personal and professional life, while the other two focus on rural life and ethnography. The Tesouro da Igreja Matriz de S. Vicente was established in 2003. Its collection includes archaeological objects, paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths’ work, textiles and decorative arts.
Vila Alva also offers different ways to explore history and culture. Its Museum of Sacred Art and Archaeology houses objects from prehistoric, Roman and medieval times. Exhibits include votive offerings and banners from the Endoenças procession. The museum is next to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Visitação, which dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. If you are planning a museum visit, check visiting arrangements in advance.
The Rota do Fresco connects Cuba with Alvito, Portel, Viana and Vidigueira. It focuses on murals in chapels, hermitages and churches. Check the arrangements for visiting each site in advance. In Cuba itself, the Centro Cultural hosts performances featuring music, theatre, fado and jazz for visitors of all backgrounds and ages. The Eco Palacete Borralho RelĂłgio offers a different kind of visit: the building dates from the 19th century and has more than 140 years of history. Guided tours are available by prior appointment; confirm the appointment again before your trip.
Vila Alva: Wine and Regional Cuisine
Vila Alva is considered one of the most characteristic villages in the municipality of Cuba. Its centuries-old vineyards and local wine cellars are associated with artisanal wine production. Culinary traditions include new wine, goat’s cheese, cured meats and bread, with November highlighted as the time for new wine. A municipal initiative took visitors through wine cellars in Vila Alva in 2024. Along the route, they could sample Talha wine and petiscos and experience Cante Alentejano. This was a time-limited event that brought together wine, food and singing.
Water and Outdoor Activities
The Barragem de Albergaria is suitable for water sports, fishing and relaxation. On 16 June 2025, the Praia Fluvial de Albergaria dos Fusos was awarded the Blue Flag for the first time. The award recognized the environmental quality, safety and facilities of the bathing area, which opened in 2023. The site includes two floating pools, sports courts for football, handball and beach volleyball, a restaurant with a panoramic terrace, a nautical centre for environmentally friendly activities and a birdwatching tower. As some facilities may change, check which services are available before your visit.
When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of themes: churches, museums and literary history sit alongside wine traditions and bathing facilities. Consider which of these matter most for your stay, and check visiting arrangements for time-specific tours or facilities.
