Corte do Pinto lies on the right bank of the Chança, a tributary of the Guadiana. The São Domingos mining heritage is an important cultural focus of the destination, alongside local craft traditions and nearby Tapada Grande. This gives visitors different themes to explore when planning a trip: the history of mining, life in the former mining settlement, and a waterside setting.

Mining History of São Domingos

The Conjunto das Minas de São Domingos is classified as a conjunto de interesse público. The classification dates from 25 June 2013; the site extends across the parishes of Corte do Pinto, Santana de Cambas, and Espírito Santo in the municipality of Mértola, Beja District. The former mining complex is presented as an open-air museum. Its exhibits illustrate life during the mining period and the various stages of ore extraction and processing.

The history includes technical facilities and archaeological traces: the complex had 27 vertical shafts, and a Roman gallery has been preserved. It also included a power station, described as the first in the Alentejo. Mining in the São Domingos region is said to have begun as early as the Chalcolithic period. During its operation, the mine was part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt and was considered Portugal’s largest and most important copper pyrite deposit. A total of 25 million tonnes of copper were extracted during the mine’s active period. Pyrite extraction ended in 1965, and the mine closed in 1966.

The Casa do Mineiro – Centro de Documentação is the first permanent site of the Museu da Mina de São Domingos. It recreates the living quarters of a mining family. The documentation centre collects and archives photographic, documentary, and material records relating to the mining complex’s 150-year history. Together, these offer two perspectives: the mine’s technology and development on the one hand, and the daily life of a mining family and the surviving records on the other.

Settlement, Routes, and Industrial Infrastructure

The former mining settlement consisted of single-storey terraced houses with whitewashed façades. The paths and squares had unpaved dirt surfaces. These features of the built environment draw attention to life alongside the ore-extraction facilities: the history of mining is about more than production figures; it also encompasses the character of the former settlement.

The PR10 MTL – Rota do Minério runs through Mina de São Domingos and past mining infrastructure and former settlements. Its listed stops include former workers’ quarters, workshops, and abandoned machinery; the route also follows old smuggling paths. Another historic link was a private railway line about 18 kilometres long, connecting the mine to Pomarão. The route and railway represent different aspects of regional history: paths through the former mining landscape and the mine’s connection to another location.

Local Traditions and Events

The parish’s architectural heritage includes the parish church and the church in Mina. Local handicrafts include goat’s and sheep’s cheese, as well as basketry made from reed and willow. These traditions give the place another cultural dimension alongside its industrial heritage.

An annual fair is held in Corte do Pinto on the second Sunday in September. A monthly market is also listed for Mina de São Domingos, on the fourth day of each month. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the programme for the relevant year or confirm the market date locally in advance.

River Landscape and Tapada Grande

Near Corte do Pinto is the Albufeira da Tapada Grande, used as a recreation area and river beach. It is located in Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana, near Mina de São Domingos. This waterside leisure spot complements the mining complex’s historical attractions. The Chança, on whose right bank Corte do Pinto lies, is itself a tributary of the Guadiana—a distinctive geographical feature of the parish’s landscape.
