Discover Cuba: Literature, Frescoes and Churches
Accommodation in Cuba
Literature, rural life, music, frescoes, churches and regional cuisine give Cuba a diverse cultural character. A historic place among olive groves with a winemaking tradition, Cuba also has a rural character. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Cuba, these themes can provide a starting point for planning your trip.
Literature and local history
Casa Fialho de Almeida is a literary museum in the center of Cuba, dedicated to the life and work of Fialho de Almeida. The buildings adjoining the museum focus on rural life and ethnography; these themes also recur in the author's writings. This focus thus connects the author and his work with aspects of rural life.
Rua da Mouraria and Rua do Carmo are described as the oldest part of the town of Cuba. They therefore offer a different historical perspective from the literary museum: here, the focus is on the history of an area of the town, while the museum focuses on the life and work of an author.
Music and cultural tradition
The choral group Os Ceifeiros de Cuba was founded in 1933 by AntĂłnio LuĂs Fialho and gave its first public performance that same year at the Feira de Cuba. As an ethnographic group, Os Ceifeiros de Cuba has made the name of Cuba and the Alentejo known throughout Portugal, from north to south, as well as abroad. The group can thus be associated both with its origins in Cuba and with a cultural presence beyond the town.
The program for the 2026 edition of the Feira Anual de Cuba included crafts, gastronomy and Cante Alentejano.
Frescoes and churches
The Rota do Fresco is a cultural tourism initiative featuring visits to selected frescoes on the walls of chapels, hermitages and churches. The visits take place in five municipalities: Alvito, Cuba, Portel, Vidigueira and Viana do Alentejo. The scope sets the offerings apart: the museum, streets and churches are all in Cuba, while the Rota do Fresco includes visits across several municipalities.
The Igreja Matriz de Cuba is believed to have been built in the 16th century; work continued until the 18th century, which explains its Mannerist and Baroque character. The Igreja de S. Pedro stands at an elevated point in the town and is a pilgrimage chapel. It offers a beautiful view over the plain. The two churches have different points of emphasis: the Matriz is notable for its construction history and style, while S. Pedro is notable for its pilgrimage function and views.
Rural character and regional cuisine
Cuba is a historic place among olive groves with a winemaking tradition. The Rota das Tabernas offers a culinary experience, taking visitors in Cuba through old, traditional taverns serving regional snacks and “copos de três”. Unlike the Rota do Fresco, its focus is on taverns and regional snacks rather than frescoes on religious buildings. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: murals, churches and pilgrimage sites, or traditional taverns and local food.
