Alvito reveals itself through its buildings, frescoes, rural trails and recurring festival days. The town sits on elevated ground in the Alentejo plain and offers sweeping views. When planning your days, you can weigh up historical details, two circular hiking routes with different time requirements, and annual festivals. This lets you organise your stay around your own priorities: a hike calls for a different time frame than a visit planned around a procession or festival date.

Buildings and artistic details

Alvito Castle is a fortified palace with a rectangular floor plan and an inner courtyard. In 1993, it was converted into and inaugurated as a Pousada de Portugal. On Praça da República, the Pelourinho de Alvito stands opposite the castle’s Torre da Fonte; its top is in the Manueline style. These buildings illustrate different forms of historic architecture, from the palace layout to the column’s finely crafted top.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção is Alvito’s parish church. It was built from the ground up towards the end of the 13th century and features elements of Mudéjar architecture on its exterior façade. An architectural detail can also be found on the white houses: some doorways have Manueline-style frames. The Capela das Almas contains frescoes painted by José de Escobar in 1603. The Ermida de São Sebastião has the form of a fortified temple typical of the Alentejo, with Manueline-Mudéjar features. It was probably built towards the end of the 15th century.

Two circular hiking routes, two time frames

For time outdoors, there are two circular hiking routes to choose from, with clearly different distances. The PR2 Memórias dos Moinhos de Alvito is 15.4 kilometres long and takes approximately four to five hours. The PR3 Rota de Santa Luzia is 6.3 kilometres long and takes approximately two hours. Both routes follow rural trails. Comparing their lengths and approximate durations can help you fit a hike into your own day’s plans.

The PR3 starts and ends at the Ermida de São Sebastião in Rossio de Alvito. Along the way, it passes through centuries-old olive groves to the Capela de Santa Luzia. This route therefore combines a specific trail with two named chapels and the olive-grove landscape. The longer PR2 and shorter PR3 differ not only in distance but also in the time required: approximately four to five hours versus approximately two hours.

When planning your hotel stay in Alvito, you can first decide whether to focus on a longer circular route, a shorter hike or a festival date. The approximate times provide a useful general guide for planning your day.

Festivals throughout the year

The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Assunção takes place every year on the last weekend of August and honours Alvito’s patron saint. The Procissão do Senhor Jesus dos Passos is held annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The Procissão do Senhor Morto takes place on Good Friday and is one of Alvito’s most solemn processions. The Feira dos Santos, also known as the Feira dos Frutos Secos, takes place on 1 November.

If you are planning a trip around one of these dates, it is worth checking the dates before making your plans. The two processions associated with Lent and Easter follow the moveable church calendar; the August celebration takes place on the last weekend of the month. The annual events therefore differ not only in their connection to Alvito’s traditions, but also in how their dates are determined.

Frescoes and getting around

The Rota do Fresco includes visits to frescoes in Alvito, Cuba, Portel, Vidigueira and Viana do Alentejo. It offers another way to explore frescoes as a theme of your trip. The Rota do Fresco is also accessible to people with reduced mobility. Alvito’s tourist information office is located at Rua dos Lobos 13, 7920-022 Alvito.

Alvito offers plenty of ways to combine culture and activity: frescoes, buildings with a range of architectural features, rural circular hiking routes and festivals with their own calendar dates. Depending on when you travel, the route distances or dates of the annual events may help determine how you plan your stay.
