In Vidigueira, Vinho de Talha brings together wine tradition and history in a distinctive way. The Centro Interpretativo do Vinho de Talha opened on 11 November 2020 as a place for interpreting and communicating the scientific and technological aspects of the intangible cultural heritage surrounding the production of this traditional wine. Using augmented reality, the exhibition traces its history from Roman times to the present day. It also presents the production cycle—from viticulture and production in clay amphorae to the tavern.

Vinho de Talha and regional traditions

Vidigueira is also the name of a wine region with a controlled designation of origin, a Região de Origem Controlada. The Rota do Vinho de Talha also passes through the Alentejo, with its epicentre in the Município da Vidigueira. The route offers direct contact with the region’s landscapes, diverse culture and millennia-old history. In Vidigueira, Casa das Talhas offers visits about the traditional production of Vinho de Talha. Check the visiting schedule in advance.

The Centro Interpretativo do Vinho de Talha lists visiting hours of 09:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:30, Tuesday to Friday. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, hours are 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 17:30. Check the schedule before your trip.

An annual event celebrating wine and culture is Vitifrades in Vila de Frades, usually held in December. The programme includes tastings of Vinho de Talha from local wine cellars and regional specialities, cultural and musical performances, a market for regional produce and crafts, and conferences and workshops. Dates and programme items may vary from one edition to another, so check the dates for your travel period.

Sacred art, literature and history

The historic sites reveal different facets of the region. A bell in the Vidigueira bell tower bears an engraved Cross of Christ, the Gama coat of arms and the year 1520. The Ermida de Santa Clara preserves wall paintings of angels and scenes from the life of Saint Clare. The Capela de São Brás features frescoes depicting the life of Jesus Christ and the Holy Family, as well as images of saints and angels; the chapel is believed to date from the 17th century.

In Vila de Frades, the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção was founded in 1545 by D. Francisco da Gama and D. Guiomar de Vilhena. The monastery belonged to the male branch of the Franciscan order and was part of the Province of Piedade. Also in Vila de Frades is the Torre do Relógio, which is thought to date from the 16th century. It is one of the few clocks in Portugal powered by a pendulum and winding mechanism.

Casa de Fialho de Almeida is the writer’s birthplace; three marble plaques on its exterior walls commemorate him. The Ermida de Santo António dos Açores, meanwhile, offers views of Vila de Frades and Vidigueira. Its large wall panels depict scenes from the life of Saint Anthony, including his sermons. The Monumento aos Produtores de Vinho de Talha honours the men and women of the municipality of Vila de Frades who work throughout the year to preserve the heritage of this wine.

Archaeological finds and Roman history also form part of the area’s story. The Menir Mac Abraão dates from the Copper Age, in the 4th or 3rd millennium BC; its geometric incisions include circles and dotted lines. The wall paintings in the Ruínas Romanas de São Cucufate helped the site become part of the Rota dos Frescos. At the Museu Casa do Arco, the permanent exhibition “A villa de S. Cucufate” offers a glimpse of daily life on a Roman agricultural estate through representative finds from archaeological excavations. The museum is also undergoing redevelopment; check the current arrangements for visits before you go.

The Museu Municipal de Vidigueira opened in 2004 in the building of the former Escola Primária Vasco da Gama. Its focus is rural society in the Vidigueira area at the beginning of the 20th century. Another historical connection lies about 2 km from Vidigueira: Vasco da Gama’s remains were kept in the church of the Convento de Nossa Senhora das Relíquias from 1539 until their transfer to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in 1898.

Trails through vineyards and olive groves

For a walk, the PR1 VDG Pelas Vinhas de São Cucufate starts in Vidigueira. The PER2 Trilhos Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe links Vidigueira and Vila de Frades through vineyards and olive groves. Information panels mark the route, which is about 12 km long; the route description is subject to field conditions. The two trails therefore differ in the details provided: the starting point is given for the PR1, while the PER2 links two places and has an approximate length.

A signposted access path to the Ermida de Santo António dos Açores begins on the EN 258, roughly opposite Vila de Frades. Check route conditions before setting out. Wine tradition, historic art and trails through the landscape offer different focal points for planning your trip and finding a suitable hotel in Vidigueira.
